Trip overview
Two nights in Tokyo, three in Kyoto and one in Osaka. Start in Tokyo and finish in Osaka; if your flight home leaves from Tokyo, see "If you fly out of Tokyo instead" below. Adjust the days to your arrival time and walking needs. Individual tickets for the intercity and airport legs cost about ¥17,500–22,600 per adult, well under a ¥50,000 7-day JR Pass.

Tokyo Station's Marunouchi building seen from the plaza Day 1Arrive in TokyoSettle in. Keep your first evening flexible.
Choose the transfer after confirming Narita or Haneda, arrival time and hotel check-in. A late arrival may leave time only for the hotel.

Yasaka-dori and Hokan-ji, Kyoto Day 3Tokyo to KyotoTake the Shinkansen, then explore one district.
Travel to Kyoto on the Tokaido Shinkansen. JR Central gives about 130 minutes between the cities; add time for station access and connections. This journey-time guidance was checked on 23 October 2026. Check again by 23 November 2026 and before booking. Consider Gion or Higashiyama after settling in.

Fushimi Inari, Kyoto Day 4Kyoto, one area at a timeFushimi Inari, or a day exploring Arashiyama.
Choose Fushimi in the south for the torii paths, or Saga and Arashiyama in the northwest for bamboo and riverside scenery. These are alternatives, not a promise to fit both into one day.

Deer at Todai-ji, Nara Day 5Nara side trip (optional)Nara Park and Todaiji, then return to Kyoto.
JR from Kyoto takes about 45 minutes (¥720 each way); Kintetsu is about 35 minutes with a limited express charge (¥1,280). Compare JR Nara and Kintetsu-Nara stations before choosing your train. Visit the park and temples at a comfortable pace; the deer are wild animals. Stay in Kyoto instead if you prefer a quieter travel day.

Dotonbori, Osaka Day 6Kyoto to OsakaSettle in, then discover Dotonbori.
Check the train for your Osaka hotel’s station. Choose Dotonbori for food and evening atmosphere; Osaka Castle Park is an alternative daytime focus. Avoid packing distant areas into the move day.
Plan this part of your trip →Day 7DepartureLet your airport and flight time set the plan.
See "Day 7: Osaka hotel to Kansai Airport" below for trains and timings from your Osaka hotel: from Namba, the Nankai rapi:t takes 34–39 minutes (¥1,670); from Osaka Station, the JR Kansai Airport Rapid takes about 65 minutes (¥1,180). Before planning sightseeing, verify your departure airport, terminal, baggage allowances and airline check-in deadline. The referenced ANA resource covers airline departure procedures rather than ground transportation. If you are flying out of Tokyo, see "If you fly out of Tokyo instead".

Before adding another stop
Plan the whole outing, not just the ride
For every destination, budget time for walking to the station, waiting, the ride, walking on arrival, visiting the venue, meals, rest breaks, and the journey back. A quick train or bus ride is only one part of the journey.
Keep the shared parts of your day realistic
Protect the group's must-do stop, a meal and a usable rest before adding optional visits. Identify any train, bus or transfer that everybody still depends on; if that common transport stops, both branches need a new plan.
Shorten the day
Protect your priority stops by dropping optional sights before adding new transfers or rigid time commitments. If transit is disrupted or walking distances change, do not default to a longer trek or more complex route—consider a shorter, simpler itinerary first.
Split up smoothly and safely
If priorities differ, stay together only while it suits everyone. Before splitting up, set a firm meeting spot, time, communication backup, and your plan for the final shared transit or return.
Plan around your group’s actual arrival time, sleep plan, walking tolerance and fixed bookings rather than general assumptions. A split plan is optional; keep the group together when age, access, communication or confidence makes separation unsuitable.
Compare a shorter itinerary with a standalone backup plan →Pacing: with every stop, this route is over-packed for six nights (our judgement). The lightest fix is to keep Day 5 (Nara) only if you're still fresh and, if your booking allows it, to sleep a fourth night in Kyoto and visit Osaka as a day trip.

Rows from official prices were checked on 8 October 2026; rows marked as our estimate are planning ranges, not quotes. The budget is for one adult sharing a room with one other person, excluding international flights, shopping and travel insurance.
Transport: individual tickets or the Japan Rail Pass
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Item | Basis | ¥ per person |
|---|---|---|
| Airport → Tokyo (Day 1) | Keikyu ¥330 (Haneda) to N'EX ¥3,330 (Narita → Shinjuku) | 330 – 3,330 |
| Tokyo → Kyoto (Day 3) | Nozomi reserved | 14,170 |
| Kyoto ⇄ Nara (Day 5, optional) | JR, ¥720 each way | 1,440 |
| Kyoto → Osaka (Day 6) | JR Special Rapid | 580 |
| Osaka → KIX (Day 7) | Nankai Airport Express ¥970 to HARUKA reserved ¥3,070 | 970 – 3,070 |
| Intercity and airport legs | Sum of the above | about 17,500 – 22,600 |
| Local trains, subways and buses | Our estimate: about ¥500–800 a day on an IC card (Tokyo 2 days, Kyoto 3 days including buses, Osaka 1 day) | 3,000 – 5,000 |
| Transport total | about 20,500 – 27,600 | |
| Compare: 7-day Japan Rail Pass, Ordinary | ¥50,000 on the official site (price held "for a limited time"); ¥53,000 through an overseas agency for purchases from 1 October 2026. Pass prices checked on 23 October 2026. Check again by 23 November 2026 and before purchase. Nozomi needs an extra pass-holder ticket: ¥4,960 for Tokyo–Kyoto | 50,000 / 53,000 |
Verdict: buy individual tickets. Even the most expensive version of this route uses well under half the pass value; against the intercity and airport legs, the pass would cost about ¥27,000–35,500 more. See our JR Pass worked examples.
Accommodation (6 nights: 2 Tokyo, 3 Kyoto, 1 Osaka)
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Tier | Typical room price per night, two sharing (our estimate) | Per person, 6 nights |
|---|---|---|
| Budget: business hotel, or a private room in a hostel | ¥10,000 – 20,000 | ¥30,000 – 60,000 |
| Mid-range: 3–4 star city hotel | ¥20,000 – 45,000 | ¥60,000 – 135,000 |
| Upscale hotel or ryokan with dinner | ¥50,000 and up | ¥150,000 and up |
These are typical ranges, not quotes. Kyoto prices climb sharply in the cherry-blossom and autumn-leaf seasons and on weekends. Official benchmark: in October–December 2025, leisure visitors to Japan spent an average of ¥12,544 per person per night on accommodation and ¥7,201 per night on food and drink, across all nationalities and an average stay of 6.9 nights (Japan Tourism Agency). Six nights at that average comes to about ¥75,000, inside our mid-range band.
Accommodation taxes, per person per night
The tax is set by the room price per person per night, so divide the room price by the number of guests. Meals are not included in the room price, and in Kyoto consumption tax isn't either.
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| City | Rate |
|---|---|
| Tokyo | Under ¥10,000: none · ¥10,000–14,999: ¥100 · ¥15,000 and up: ¥200. From 1 April 2027: 3% at ¥13,000 and up |
| Kyoto (from 1 March 2026) | Under ¥6,000: ¥200 · ¥6,000–19,999: ¥400 · ¥20,000–49,999: ¥1,000 · ¥50,000–99,999: ¥4,000 · ¥100,000 and up: ¥10,000 |
| Osaka Prefecture (from 1 September 2025) | Under ¥5,000: none · ¥5,000–14,999: ¥200 · ¥15,000–19,999: ¥400 · ¥20,000 and up: ¥500 |
What this plan costs in tax (2 Tokyo, 3 Kyoto and 1 Osaka nights, our arithmetic): at ¥8,000 per person per night, ¥0 + ¥1,200 + ¥200 = ¥1,400; at ¥15,000, ¥400 + ¥1,200 + ¥400 = ¥2,000; at ¥25,000, ¥400 + ¥3,000 + ¥500 = ¥3,900. Some booking sites include the tax in the price and some collect it at the hotel.
Entry fees for the sights in this plan (adult)
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Sight (day) | Fee |
|---|---|
| Meiji Jingu (Day 2) | Free. Open sunrise to sunset (October: 5:40–16:40) |
| Shibuya Crossing, Gion and Higashiyama streets, Dotonbori | Free (public streets) |
| Fushimi Inari Taisha (Day 4) and the Arashiyama bamboo path | Fushimi Inari: no admission fee is listed on the shrine's site or Kyoto City's guide page, and Keihan says the shrine can be visited 24 hours a day. Bamboo path: no official fee information found as of 8 October 2026 |
| Tenryu-ji, Arashiyama (Day 4, if you choose Arashiyama) | Garden ¥500; garden and buildings ¥800. Open 8:30–17:00 |
| Todai-ji Great Buddha Hall, Nara (Day 5) | ¥800; joint ticket with the Todai-ji Museum ¥1,200. Hall open 7:30–17:30 (April–October) or 8:00–17:00 (November–March) |
| Nara Park (Day 5) | Free (park) |
| Osaka Castle Main Tower (Day 6, daytime option) | ¥1,200. Open 9:00–18:00, last entry 30 minutes before closing |
Typical total: about ¥2,000–3,200 (our arithmetic), for Fushimi Inari (no fee listed) or Tenryu-ji (¥500–800) on Day 4, Todai-ji (¥800–1,200) on Day 5 and Osaka Castle (¥1,200) on Day 6.
Food and IC card
Our estimate, per person per day: budget ¥4,000–6,000 (convenience-store breakfast, ramen or a set lunch, a simple dinner); mid-range ¥7,000–12,000 (café breakfast, a sit-down lunch, an izakaya or restaurant dinner); treat days ¥15,000 and up. Over 7 days that's about ¥28,000–42,000 on a budget, or ¥49,000–84,000 mid-range.
Load ¥3,000 on an IC card at the start and expect to add ¥1,000–2,000 over the week for local rides (our estimate). A Welcome Suica is valid for 180 days with no deposit; you can top up to ¥20,000 in cash at machines showing the Welcome Suica mark or at Seven Bank ATMs, and any remaining balance is generally not refunded, so run it down on the last day. It works on trains and buses showing the nationwide mutual-use logo, but not for one continuous journey from one IC area into another. An IC card pays only the basic fare on the N'EX, Skyliner, HARUKA and rapi:t; you still need a seat or express ticket.

Keep a reserve of about 10% for taxis, luggage forwarding and changes of plan (our recommendation).
Getting to your first hotel, and leaving from KIX
Day 1: airport to your Tokyo hotel
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| You land at | Your hotel is near | Simplest option | Time and fare |
|---|---|---|---|
| Narita | Tokyo Station or Ginza | N'EX to Tokyo | fastest 53 min · ¥3,140 |
| Narita | Ueno or Asakusa | Skyliner to Keisei-Ueno | about 41 min · ¥2,580 |
| Narita | Shinjuku, with heavy bags | Airport Limousine bus (some buses stop at hotel doors) | about 1 h 45 min from T1 · ¥3,600 |
| Haneda | Shinagawa | Keikyu | 11–14 min · ¥330 |
| Haneda | Shinjuku or Shibuya | Keikyu + JR via Shinagawa | 30–50 min (the two official estimates differ) · ¥590 to Shinjuku |
| Haneda | Hamamatsucho, Shiodome, or along the Yamanote Line | Tokyo Monorail | about 20 min · ¥520 to Hamamatsucho (IC ¥519) |
Our planning figure: allow 2–3 hours from landing at Narita to your hotel, or 1–2 hours from Haneda, for immigration, baggage, tickets and the ride. If you land after about 21:00, use our late-arrival guide. On Day 3, board the Shinkansen at the station nearest your hotel: Shinagawa suits Haneda-side and Shinjuku hotels, and Tokyo Station suits Ginza and Ueno. At Kyoto, a taxi from Kyoto Station to a Gion or Higashiyama hotel is often easier with bags than the bus (our estimate: 15–25 minutes, depending on traffic).
Day 7: Osaka hotel to Kansai Airport
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Your hotel is near | Simplest option | Time and fare |
|---|---|---|
| Namba, Shinsaibashi or Dotonbori | Nankai rapi:t (reserved) or Airport Express | 34–39 min · ¥1,670 / about 43–45 min · ¥970 |
| Umeda or Osaka Station | JR Kansai Airport Rapid (first four cars) | about 65 min · ¥1,180 |
| Shin-Osaka | JR HARUKA | about 50 min · ¥3,070 reserved. The HARUKA One-way Ticket is for travellers with a non-Japanese passport and Temporary Visitor status. From Osaka or Shin-Osaka, it costs ¥1,800 for purchases through 31 October 2026 and ¥1,900 for purchases from 1 November 2026. The purchase date determines the price, rather than the exchange or travel date. Buy it before arriving in Japan; it also works towards the airport. Discount-ticket prices and eligibility checked on 23 October 2026. Check again by 31 October 2026 and before purchase. |
| Kyoto (four nights in Kyoto) | JR HARUKA | 75–84 min · ¥3,590 reserved |
Worked timing (our estimate): for an 11:00 international departure, aim to reach KIX by about 08:30, and check your airline's recommended arrival time and check-in deadline, which differ by airline. From a Namba hotel that means leaving around 07:20 (about 15 minutes to the platform, a 34–39 minute rapi:t and a buffer); from Umeda, leave around 06:45. Check out the night before if you can.
If you fly out of Tokyo instead
The route ends in Osaka, so a flight home from Tokyo adds about 2½–3½ hours of backtracking on Day 7 (our estimate). The easiest fix is an open-jaw ticket: fly into Tokyo and out of Kansai (KIX). If you can't, choose one of these.
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Option A: 4 nights in Kyoto, return on departure day | Option B: last night back in Tokyo | |
|---|---|---|
| Nights | Tokyo 2 · Kyoto 4 | Tokyo 2 · Kyoto 3 · Tokyo 1 |
| What changes | Day 6: Osaka becomes a day trip from Kyoto (JR about 30 min, ¥580 each way). Day 7: Kyoto → Tokyo by Nozomi (2 h 8 min – 2 h 21 min, ¥14,170), then to the airport | Day 6: Kyoto → Tokyo in the morning (¥14,170). Dotonbori and Osaka Castle drop out. Day 7: hotel → airport |
| Best for | Haneda flights after about 14:00, or Narita after about 16:00 (our estimate) | Morning flights, and most Narita departures |
| How full it is (our judgement) | Full, so keep Day 6 light; lighter without Nara | Over-packed, especially with Nara |
| Airport leg on the last day | Shinagawa → Haneda by Keikyu (about 11–14 min, ¥330) or Tokyo → Narita by N'EX (fastest 53 min, ¥3,140) | Same |
Worked timing for Option A (our estimate): for a 14:00 departure from Haneda, aim to arrive at the airport by about 11:30 and check your airline's check-in deadline. Leave Shinagawa on the Keikyu by about 11:00, so take a Nozomi out of Kyoto by about 08:30. For a 14:00 departure from Narita you'd need a Nozomi out of Kyoto by about 07:30, so Option B is the safer choice.
Transport cost for Option A (official fares, our sum): with Narita both ways, ¥5,200 for the visitor N'EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket (valid 14 days, Narita → Tokyo first; the regular round trip is ¥6,280) plus ¥28,340 of Shinkansen and ¥1,160 Kyoto ⇄ Osaka makes ¥34,700, or ¥36,140 with Nara. With Haneda both ways, ¥660 + ¥28,340 + ¥1,160 = ¥30,160. Either way it is well under the ¥50,000 7-day JR Pass, so buy individual tickets.
Questions about this route
Do I need a Japan Rail Pass for this route?
No. The intercity and airport legs add up to about ¥17,500–22,600 per adult, against ¥50,000 for a 7-day Ordinary pass bought on the official site (¥53,000 through an overseas agency). Buy individual tickets.
Can I fly into Tokyo and out of Osaka?
Yes, and that's how this route is designed. Book an "open-jaw" or "multi-city" ticket into Narita or Haneda and out of Kansai (KIX). From a Namba hotel, the Nankai rapi:t reaches KIX in 34–39 minutes for ¥1,670. From Osaka Station, the JR Kansai Airport Rapid takes about 65–71 minutes for ¥1,180.
Is 7 days enough for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?
It's full. With every stop, this route is over-packed for six nights (our judgement). Skip the optional Nara day, or sleep a fourth night in Kyoto and do Osaka as a day trip, and it becomes comfortable.
What do I do with my luggage on the Tokyo → Kyoto day?
Carry it if each bag measures under 160 cm (length + width + height). For bags of 161–250 cm, book a Nozomi seat with an oversized-baggage area when you buy the ticket (no extra cost; ¥1,000 if you board without one). Or forward the bag from your Tokyo hotel the evening before: about ¥3,160 for a size-160 suitcase with Yamato.
Should I stay in Osaka at all, or just Kyoto?
One Osaka night suits this route because it ends at KIX. If you'd rather not move hotels, stay four nights in Kyoto: the evening in Dotonbori costs ¥1,160 return by JR, and the last JR Special Rapid back from Osaka left at 00:00 on our sample weekday. On departure day, though, the HARUKA from Kyoto to KIX takes 75–84 minutes.
How much should I budget?
About ¥82,000–134,000 per person on a budget, or ¥134,000–254,000 mid-range, sharing a room, excluding flights and shopping (our estimate; see the rough budget). Add about 10% for taxis, luggage forwarding and changes.
Your next step
- Decide your departure airport. KIX keeps this route as it is; for Tokyo, pick Option A or B above.
- Book the hotels in this order: Kyoto (3 nights) first, because Kyoto rooms are the scarcest and dearest in spring and autumn; then Tokyo (2); then Osaka (1, near Namba for the rapi:t or Osaka Station for JR).
- Buy individual tickets. Book the Day 3 Nozomi seat (with an oversized-baggage area if a bag is 161–250 cm) once your date is fixed, and keep the KIX train flexible.

- A late first arrival (after about 21:00)
- Keep Day 1 for the hotel and move Shibuya to Day 2 afternoon. No cost change; see our late-arrival guide.
- A flight home from Tokyo
- Use Option A (4 nights in Kyoto, Nozomi back on Day 7) for Haneda flights after about 14:00, and Option B (last night in Tokyo) otherwise. It adds ¥14,170 for the Nozomi back, still well under the ¥50,000 JR Pass.
- A flight home from KIX
- Keep the route as it is. It saves the 2¼-hour ride back to Tokyo.
- Less walking and fewer hotel hops
- Drop Day 5 (Nara), or sleep four nights in Kyoto and visit Osaka as a day trip. With every stop, the six nights are over-packed (our judgement).
- USJ is a must
- Swap Day 6 for USJ and stay the last night near Osaka Station: Osaka Station → Universal City is 14 min, ¥200.
- One large suitcase each
- Forward bags from Tokyo to Kyoto on the Day 2 evening (they arrive on Day 3), or book oversized-baggage seats if bags are 161–250 cm. Yamato size 160 from Kanto to Kansai costs ¥3,160 per bag.
- A stroller, or step-free routes needed
- Take a taxi from Kyoto Station to a Gion or Higashiyama hotel on Day 3 (our estimate: 15–25 min, depending on traffic).
