Japan travel insurance, checked before you buy
JNTO strongly recommends travel insurance for all visitors, and since 2021 foreigners with unpaid medical bills in Japan may be restricted or refused entry. The first question is not which insurer wins. It is whether cover you already hold works for this trip, and what payment route you will face if you need care in Japan.

Start with medical coverage
Check the exact terms covering medical treatment in Japan—not just a generic promise of “overseas” or “worldwide” coverage.

Check evacuation and repatriation separately
Moving you to appropriate care or home is a different promise from paying the treatment bill.

Check your existing coverage
An annual policy, card perk, employer benefit, or health plan can help, but check its actual Japan coverage to be sure.

Match the real trip
Check your total trip length, transit stops, declared medical conditions, and planned activities directly against the policy terms.

Prepare the payment route
Direct billing can depend on the facility, insurer and guarantee-of-payment process. Some insurers require you to pay upfront, and some clinics don't accept credit cards, so keep a plan for paying first, including cash.
