Paying in Japan without betting on one method
Japan is not one cash rule or one card rule. Start with the place or route that must work, keep a fallback, then compare fees and products.
Start with the decision orderThe order these decisions actually resolve in
- 01
Start with the exact place
A national statement about card acceptance cannot settle a remote inn, a particular restaurant or the bus you must board.
- 02
Keep two payment lanes
Use an accepted card, but keep Japanese cash for cash-specific situations and a failed card or phone payment.
- 03
Treat IC balance separately
An IC card is convenient where the route and merchant support it. It is not universal money, and top-up rules vary.
- 04
Know a compatible ATM
Find a foreign-card route before cash becomes urgent. A supported logo does not guarantee that the issuer will authorise the card.
- 05
Read the three cost layers
Separate the ATM operator fee, your issuer's fee and the currency-conversion or DCC choice shown on the screen.
- 06
Compare products last
Only after the itinerary exposes the real payment gaps should a card, bank or wallet comparison begin.
