Japan holidays, closures, and weather disruptions: what to check

Keep each source of evidence separate

1. Holiday dates are in the Cabinet Office table below.
2. Check the facility's official calendar or notices.
3. Check the operator's official service alerts or timetables.
4. Check the corresponding Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) bulletin designed for your specific hazard and forecast timeframe.
5. Record the checked date and expiry.
6. Prepare one independently confirmed alternative.

A national-holiday date does not prove a facility closure or changed hours. If an official facility, operator or safety notice is absent, the result is Unknown, not “open as normal.”

On a day trip, the author's mother, haruru.1002, arrived at her planned breakfast stop before it opened and went for a walk nearby while she waited. Compare your arrival time with the first stop's opening hours. If you would arrive early, leave later or choose another place for breakfast.

Calendar dates do not always reflect actual opening schedules

The Cabinet Office calendar lists the remaining 2026 national holidays (3 November and 23 November 2026) and all of 2027. A national-holiday date still cannot establish one facility's hours, so the table below pairs each peak with what happens and what to do.

The statutory New Year entry is 1 January. JNTO highlights New Year, Golden Week, and Obon as the primary peak travel seasons when operations may vary, but Obon is not on the Cabinet Office national-holiday list. For past notices, the Kyoto Golden Week 2026 advisory (historical: its timetable details have passed and applied only to Kyoto) shows how to read a dated notice, so don't carry its details into a future trip.

• Months ahead: save the official sources to recheck; do not project an outcome. JMA's 30-year averages (in the key facts above) are for packing, not for predicting a particular day.
• One week ahead: review the current official regional forecast.
• Close to departure: check warnings or advisories and the named operator.
• Rapid changes: follow current official safety and operator instructions.

A weather warning indicates hazardous conditions, but it does not mean your specific train, flight, attraction, or hotel service has been cancelled.

JMA's current English alert-level leaflet gives safety actions, not trip predictions. For flooding, heavy rain, landslides and storm surges covered by the leaflet, Alert Level 4 means evacuate immediately from dangerous areas. Alert Level 5 means secure immediate safety in any safer location; do not wait for Level 5. On the map the levels are colour-coded: white (Level 1, early advisory), yellow (Level 2, advisory), red (Level 3, warning), purple (Level 4, urgent warning: evacuate immediately from dangerous areas) and black (Level 5, emergency).

A typhoon forecast circle shows the range where the typhoon center is expected to be located with approximately 70% probability. It is not an impact or safety boundary. Being outside the forecast circle does not mean you are safe, and being inside it does not prove cancellation. Railway service alerts specify both current status and the operating company

During planned service suspensions, the suspension risk, official implementation, service resumption, and alternative transport are separate updates that require individual confirmation. Alternative transport arrangements are not guaranteed.

The MLIT planned service suspension guidelines explains that these decisions can change with circumstances. Its model case gives a typical sequence: a notice that a planned suspension is possible (for example about 48 hours ahead), a detailed plan (for example about 24 hours ahead), a same-day plan with last trains, and then a restart outlook. Each operator sets its own timings. Check the latest rail operation status with each exact operator through its own official site; the Official train operations portal is a directory, not a replacement for the responsible company's live notice. That portal blocked our checker on 8 October 2026, so open it in an ordinary browser.

Tokyo, 29 December 2026 to 3 January 2027

You've planned the Ghibli Museum on 30 December, Tokyo National Museum on 31 December, SHIBUYA SKY on 1 January and Kyoto from 2 January.

1. Ghibli, 30 December: closed 27 December to 2 January. Move it to 26 December or later in January, and remember tickets go on sale at 10:00 JST on the 10th of the previous month.
2. Tokyo National Museum, 31 December: closed 26–31 December. Go by 21 December for the full museum (only two galleries open 22–25 December), or wait for its 1 January announcement.
3. SHIBUYA SKY, 1 January: no normal operation. Move it to 2 January or later.
4. Tokyo to Kyoto, 2 January: inside the Nozomi all-reserved period (25 December to 5 January), so you can't ride without a seat reservation. Seats for 2 January go on sale at 10:00 JST on 2 December; smartEX users can book earlier.
5. What still works on 1 January: shrines (crowded) and 24-hour convenience stores.
6. Result: three of four plans had to move, and all of this was known in October.

A typhoon before your Shinkansen day

You have Tokyo to Kyoto on Thursday at 10:00. On Monday, JMA's five-day track puts the forecast circle over central Japan for Thursday.

1. Monday and Tuesday (three to four days out): JMA updates the track every six hours. Don't cancel non-refundable bookings yet. Check your hotel's cancellation deadline and the train cancellation and refund rules.
2. Tuesday at about 10:00 (about 48 hours before): if JR posts a possible planned suspension for Thursday, this is the moment to act. Move the trip to Wednesday or Friday while seats remain, and add a hotel night if needed.
3. Wednesday at about 10:00 (about 24 hours before): the detailed plan appears, with the times trains stop. If your 10:00 train falls inside it, change now.
4. Thursday: if a purple (Level 4) warning or an evacuation instruction covers where you are, safety comes first and travel waits.
5. Result: deciding at the 48-hour notice usually keeps you a seat on another day; waiting until the day often doesn't (our judgement). The 48- and 24-hour timings are MLIT's model examples, and each operator sets its own.

Consider adjusting your timing, choosing an indoor alternative nearby, taking a later connection, adding a night, or switching to a weather-resilient route. Be sure to check opening hours, reservations, and transit status just as carefully.

A provider cancelling your stay is a different problem from deciding to cancel your own trip. Keep the booking confirmation, cancellation message and support case number together, and ask the booking channel to record who cannot fulfil the reservation.

1. Open the reservation in the booking app or official website. Send the provider's message to support before accepting a request to cancel it yourself.
2. Give your arrival date and time, number of guests, room needs and usable area. Ask for a replacement that meets those conditions, with its check-in deadline confirmed.
3. Ask separately about the original refund, the replacement price and any contribution toward additional costs. Get the amount and conditions in writing before relying on reimbursement.
4. If you must arrange tonight's room yourself, keep the new confirmation and receipts. Allow for the possibility that a refund has been initiated but has not reached your account.

Airbnb's host-cancellation guidance tells guests to ask the host to cancel when the host cannot accommodate them. A host cancellation before check-in qualifies for a full refund if the guest does not rebook; comparable replacement accommodation depends on availability. The checked help article also offers booking credit, which is returned as a full refund after 72 hours if unused. This is Airbnb's rule, not a promise from every booking site.

Airbnb's rebooking and refund policy also distinguishes help finding a replacement from paying extra accommodation costs. Do not assume the whole price difference will be covered. For a replacement arrival after normal reception hours, use the late-arrival hotel checks.

1. Check your dates against the holiday and peak table. If they overlap 25 December to 5 January, 29 April to 5 May or mid-August, reserve trains as soon as they go on sale (10:00 JST, one month before).
2. For each museum or attraction on those dates, open its December or holiday notice now and write down the closed days.
3. During typhoon season (roughly June to October), save your operator's service-status page and JMA's typhoon page, and check both 48 hours before every long journey.

• Check directly with the venue for opening hours, last entry, and reservation changes on the day you plan to visit.
• Ask the transport operator which services are affected, when the next update will be posted, and whether you need a different ticket for alternatives.
• Check refund rules and missed-connection protections directly with your booking provider.
• Check with your insurer about this specific claim, required documentation, and pre-approval before spending extra.
• For New Year or Obon, save the exact facility and operator calendar; a seasonal travel warning does not answer your booking. JR's FY2027 Nozomi all-reserved dates were not published when we checked on 11 October 2026; JR Central's FY2027 season calendar, which covers August 2027, was.

Treat service status as unconfirmed until verified directly with the operator. Never assume normal operations simply because no service alert is posted—always check before you travel.
