Kanazawa in a day: Kenrokuen's hours, the free early entry and the trains there and back

Before you go: three things that change your plan

  • You can see Kenrokuen for free if you go early. The garden opens free of charge before paid hours every day of the year, through Renchi-mon (Hasuike) Entrance and Zuishinzaka Entrance only. From 16 to 31 October that means 5:00–7:45, and from November to February 6:00–7:45 (last entry 7:30). You must be out 15 minutes before paid opening, so from 16 October to the end of February, plan to leave by 7:45 at the latest and come back later if you want the teahouse.
  • Winter hours start on 16 October. From 16 October to the end of February the paid garden runs 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), an hour shorter at each end than in summer. If you are coming on an afternoon train from Tokyo, check that you will arrive before 16:30.
  • Shiguretei, the teahouse inside, keeps its own hours. It is open 9:00–16:30 (last entry 16:00) and closes from 29 December to 3 January, so a free early visit and a teahouse stop cannot happen in the same entry.

As an example of a timetable, in October 2026 the Kagayaki 504 leaves Kanazawa at 08:10 and reaches Tokyo at 10:37, and all its cars are reserved. That is a dated sample, not the winter 2027 timetable.
