A Nikko day trip from Tokyo: which NIKKO PASS, what it leaves out, and the autumn and winter limits

Before you go: three things that change your plan

  • Toshogu's last entry is 30 minutes before it closes, and it closes earlier from November. It is open 9:00–17:00 from 1 April to 31 October and 9:00–16:00 from 1 November to 31 March, so in winter you need to be at the gate by 15:30.
  • The NIKKO PASS does not cover the limited express. The pass (foreign visitors only; Japanese nationals travelling with them can also buy one) covers the ordinary-fare round trip from Asakusa and Tobu buses in its area, but each limited express seat is a separate ticket, on sale from one month before you travel.
  • The Akechidaira Ropeway is closed for renovation until 31 August 2027, and Tobu says the closure may be extended. Plan the Lake Chuzenji side without it.

What to know first

For a day trip, the NIKKO PASS WORLD HERITAGE AREA (adult ¥3,000) is the one Tobu itself suggests in the busy autumn season. It includes one round trip between Asakusa and Shimo-Imaichi, Tobu Railway travel on from Shimo-Imaichi to Tobu-Nikko and Shin-Fujiwara, and Tobu buses within the World Heritage area. It does not cover the limited express supplement, which you buy separately, or entry to the shrines and temples. Toshogu costs an adult ¥1,600. From 1 November to 31 March, Toshogu closes at 16:00 and stops admitting at 15:30, so a winter day trip needs an early start.

What the pass does not cover

  • The limited express supplement. On a limited express you buy a separate limited express ticket. These go on sale one month before the travel date.
  • Shrine and temple admission.
  • JR-connected trains from Shinjuku and Ikebukuro. These routes are outside the pass.

Tobu gives about 1 hour 50 minutes for the direct limited express from Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko.

Autumn: the Lake Chuzenji traffic problem

In late October or November, Tobu warns that buses between Tobu-Nikko Station and Lake Chuzenji can take more than two hours longer than usual. If traffic stops you using the bus, that is not grounds for a refund. For a day trip in this period, Tobu itself suggests the WORLD HERITAGE AREA pass, whose bus coverage is limited to the World Heritage area.

The Akechidaira Ropeway is closed for renovation from 16 January 2026 to 31 August 2027, so leave it out of any plan in that period. Tobu says the closure may be extended.

Winter

  • Bring warm clothes and shoes that grip; Nikko's visitor guidance recommends both.
  • Buses from the station keep running in winter, on winter timetables.
  • If you drive: roads can be icy on a sunny day with no snow, and the city tells drivers to fit winter tyres from late autumn to early spring.

Worked example: two adults, a December day trip

  • Passes: 2 × ¥3,000 = ¥6,000 for WORLD HERITAGE AREA.
  • Limited express: a separate ticket each way for each of you, on sale one month before.
  • Toshogu: 2 × ¥1,600 = ¥3,200.
  • Fixed costs before the limited express: ¥9,200, plus a limited express ticket each way for each of you: ¥1,650 per person on Kegon or Revaty, or ¥1,940 for a SPACIA X standard seat, at Tobu's regular rate. For two people that is ¥6,600 return on Kegon or Revaty (about ¥15,800 in total) or ¥7,760 on SPACIA X (about ¥17,000). Tobu charges ¥200 more on its peak dates and ¥200 less in its off-season, so check your date on Tobu's seasonal calendar.
  • Timing: with about 1 hour 50 minutes from Asakusa and Toshogu's last admission at 15:30, leave Asakusa in the morning.

Then put the limited express sale date, one month before, in your calendar. If you are planning where to stay in Tokyo for an Asakusa start, read where to stay in Tokyo on a first trip; to compare with a JR pass, read Japan Rail Pass or individual tickets.
