A Nara day trip from Kyoto or Osaka: which station, which train, Todaiji and the deer rules

Checked against 7 official sources. 3 minute read.

What to know first

Nara has two main stations, JR Nara and Kintetsu Nara, and they are not the same place. From Kyoto, JR's Miyakoji Rapid runs straight to JR Nara; from Osaka, JR's Yamatoji Rapid does the same. Kintetsu runs limited expresses to Kintetsu Nara from both Kyoto and Osaka-Namba, but those are reserved-seat only and need a limited express ticket on top of the fare. From Kintetsu Nara, Todaiji is about 20 minutes on foot. Bring cash for Todaiji, which charges adults ¥800 for the Great Buddha Hall. And treat the deer as wild animals: crackers only, no touching.

Not every Kintetsu limited express from Kyoto goes to Nara, so look for Kintetsu Nara as the destination on the departure board.

From the station to Todaiji

  • From Kintetsu Nara: walk east through Noborioji-cho; Todaiji puts it at about 20 minutes.
  • From either station by bus: take the city loop bus to the Todaiji Daibutsuden / Kasuga Taisha-mae stop, then walk about five minutes.

The deer: the rules the deer-protection foundation sets

  • Feed them deer crackers only, nothing else.
  • Hand over crackers straight away; do not tease.
  • Take your rubbish with you: deer swallow paper and plastic.
  • From September to November, the rutting season, keep away from male deer.
  • They are wild animals and can turn aggressive even though they are used to people. Do not touch them, however friendly they look.
  • Children are at particular risk of being charged or head-butted, because their faces are at the deer's eye level.

Worked example: two adults and a nine-year-old from Osaka in November

  • Train: Yamatoji Rapid from Osaka, direct to JR Nara.
  • To Todaiji: city loop bus to Todaiji Daibutsuden / Kasuga Taisha-mae, then about five minutes on foot.
  • Great Buddha Hall: 2 × ¥800 + ¥400 = ¥2,000, in cash.
  • Timing: in November the hall opens at 08:00 and closes at 17:00.
  • Deer: November is still rutting season, so keep the child away from the males and hold the cracker bag yourself.
