Booking a cherry blossom trip for spring 2027: what to book now and what can wait
Checked against 18 official sources. 9 minute read.
What to know first
Book your flights and refundable hotel rooms now, in October or November 2026, for a window rather than a date. Nobody knows the 2027 bloom dates yet: private forecasts start in winter, and Japan's weather agency (JMA) publishes observations, not forecasts. Train seats, timed garden tickets and the order of your cities can wait until February or March 2027. Easter falls on 28 March 2027, in the middle of the usual bloom in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, so expect busy flights and hotels from the UK, France and Germany.
Next step: Choose a 10–14 day window using the bloom dates below, then book rooms you can cancel free of charge and put every cancellation deadline in your calendar.
- Tokyo full bloom, 2021–2026

When the blossoms usually open, city by city
JMA records two dates for one sample tree in each city, mostly the Somei-yoshino variety. Flowering is the first day five or six blossoms are open. Full bloom is the first day about 80% of the buds are open. The normal is the average for 1991–2020.
Fukuoka: normal flowering 22 March, normal full bloom 31 March; from 2021 to 2026 it flowered between 12 March and 27 March, and reached full bloom between 22 March and 3 April.
Tokyo: normal flowering 24 March, normal full bloom 31 March; from 2021 to 2026 it flowered between 14 March and 29 March, and reached full bloom between 22 March and 4 April.
Kyoto: normal flowering 26 March, normal full bloom 4 April; from 2021 to 2026 it flowered between 16 March and 29 March, and reached full bloom between 24 March and 5 April.
Osaka: normal flowering 27 March, normal full bloom 4 April; from 2021 to 2026 it flowered between 19 March and 30 March, and reached full bloom between 27 March and 6 April.
Sendai: normal flowering 8 April, normal full bloom 13 April; from 2021 to 2026 it flowered between 26 March and 8 April, and reached full bloom between 31 March and 11 April.
Sapporo: normal flowering 1 May, normal full bloom 6 May; from 2021 to 2026 it flowered between 15 April and 23 April, and reached full bloom between 21 April and 27 April.

What the last six springs show
Recent springs ran ahead of the normals. In four of the last six years, Tokyo flowered before its normal date. Sapporo reached full bloom in April every year from 2021 to 2026, although its normal is in May.
The same city can vary by about two weeks. Tokyo's full bloom fell on 22 March 2021 and 22 March 2023, but on 4 April 2024. Tokyo also usually runs a few days ahead of Kyoto and Osaka: in every year from 2021 to 2026, Tokyo reached full bloom before both.
Our recommendation: if you are coming from Europe and the 2027 timing is still unknown, aim for about 26 March 2027 to 6 April 2027 and see Tokyo before Kansai. In each of the last six years, at least one of Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka reached full bloom inside that window. We found no official figure for how long blossoms last after full bloom; rain or wind can shorten it. Later in April, go north to Sendai or Sapporo.

Where the 2027 forecasts will come from
JMA stopped issuing blossom forecasts after the 2009 season, saying private weather companies now provided similar information. Forecasts now come from companies such as Japan Meteorological Corporation, Weathernews and the Japan Weather Association, whose tenki.jp data is used on the national tourism site, japan.travel.
For the 2026 season, Weathernews published its first forecast on 8 January 2026 and updated it until April. When we checked on 8 October 2026, no company had announced the date of its first 2027 forecast, and JMA had published nothing for 2027. Early forecasts shift, so don't move bookings because of them. Once the season starts, JMA posts the actual flowering and full-bloom dates.

What to book when
Flights from Europe: airlines typically open sales about 11 months before travel, though it varies. Book in October or November 2026, with a fare you can change.
Hotels: many open about 9–12 months ahead, which is typical rather than a published rule. Book refundable rooms now and check the free-cancellation deadline, not just the price. Ryokan and small inns vary and are often the strictest about cancellation, so book them once you've chosen your dates.
Shinkansen seats on SmartEX (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka): requests are accepted from 05:30 Japan time one year ahead and confirmed about one month before. This is optional, and requests can't include oversized-baggage seats.
Shinkansen and limited-express seats on all JR companies: on sale at 10:00 Japan time one month before travel. For travel on 1 April 2027, book on 1 March 2027. February 2027 has no 29th, 30th or 31st, so for travel from 29 March 2027 to 31 March 2027 check the opening date with JR.
Timed garden tickets, such as Shinjuku Gyoen on peak days or the Japan Mint's Cherry Blossom Passage in Osaka, were announced only in March in 2026. Book only once the 2027 dates are announced.

Worked example: a family tied to the Easter school holiday
A family whose London school breaks from 29 March 2027 to 9 April 2027 (Tower Hamlets' dates) flies out on Saturday 27 March 2027 and lands on Sunday 28 March 2027. They plan Tokyo for 4 nights (28 March 2027 to 1 April 2027), then Kyoto for 4 nights and Osaka for 3 nights, flying home on 8 April 2027.
Against the record: Tokyo's full bloom fell between 22 March and 4 April in 2021–2026, so the Tokyo nights overlap it in most years, and Kyoto's fell between 24 March and 5 April, so the Kyoto nights from 1 April 2027 catch it in a late year. In an early year they still see the end of the bloom in Kyoto and the late varieties in Osaka.
Their train: the Tokyo-to-Kyoto Shinkansen on 1 April 2027 goes on sale at 10:00 Japan time on 1 March 2027, which is 01:00 in London and 02:00 in Paris and Berlin. They set an alarm for that night, and keep every hotel refundable until mid-March 2027, when the forecasts have settled.

How to book hotels when you can't know the bloom date
Book the whole trip, not just guessed peak days. A 12-night stay still works if Tokyo flowers a week early; four nights timed to a guessed date may not.
Book only refundable rooms. Many Japanese hotels charge a share of the room rate from a few days before arrival, and booking sites sometimes set earlier deadlines. Add each deadline to your calendar.
Keep the order of cities flexible, and don't hold several rooms for the same night just in case: some hotels and booking sites don't allow duplicate bookings. If you keep one backup night, cancel it as soon as you've decided. Leave one spare day: rain or strong wind can end the bloom early.
Easter, school holidays and Japanese holidays in spring 2027
Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, with Good Friday on 26 March 2027 and Easter Monday on 29 March 2027 (GOV.UK).
England sets term dates by council or school, and academies can differ from their council: for example, Tower Hamlets breaks from 29 March 2027 to 9 April 2027 and Ealing from 26 March 2027 to 9 April 2027. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set theirs separately, so check your own council or school.
France, from the last day of classes to the day classes resume: Zone C from 3 April 2027 to 19 April 2027, Zone A from 10 April 2027 to 26 April 2027, and Zone B from 17 April 2027 to 3 May 2027.
Germany: most states break from about 22 March 2027 to 3 April 2027 (Saxony-Anhalt only from 22 March 2027 to 27 March 2027). Saarland breaks from 30 March 2027 to 9 April 2027, Schleswig-Holstein from 30 March 2027 to 10 April 2027, and Hamburg earlier, from 1 March 2027 to 12 March 2027.
Japan: Vernal Equinox Day falls on Sunday 21 March 2027, with Monday 22 March 2027 as a substitute holiday, so Japan has a three-day weekend from 20 March 2027. Golden Week starts with Showa Day on 29 April 2027, then 3 May 2027 to 5 May 2027. Japanese schools typically break in late March and early April; this isn't set nationally.
What this means: late March 2027 combines Easter, English and most German school holidays, the Japanese three-day weekend and the usual bloom in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Families tied to English or German school holidays should book now. French families have more choice: Zone C's break overlaps typical full bloom in Kansai and Sendai, while Zones A and B suit Sapporo and later varieties. If you can travel in term time, the first week of April 2027 avoids the Easter weekend.

Avoiding the worst crowds
Our recommendation: aim for 7:00–8:00 at the best-known spots, choose weekdays, and in 2027 avoid 20 March 2027 to 22 March 2027 and the 27 March 2027 to 28 March 2027 weekend at the most famous places. In Kyoto, the city's official travel guide gives hourly crowd forecasts from 06:00 to 23:00 for spots such as Kiyomizu-zaka, Arashiyama and Fushimi Inari.
Shinjuku Gyoen, Tokyo: on 28 March 2026, 29 March 2026 and 5 April 2026, visitors between 10:00 and 16:00 needed timed tickets, sold online first come, first served from 2 March 2026. Entry without a reservation was allowed from 9:00 to 10:00 and from 16:00 to 17:30. The 2027 arrangements had not been announced on 8 October 2026.
Japan Mint Cherry Blossom Passage, Osaka: in 2026 it opened from 9 April 2026 to 15 April 2026 for varieties that bloom after Somei-yoshino, with advance online registration for a time slot and a QR code shown at the gate. The Mint had not posted 2027 dates on 8 October 2026.
Inui-dori Street, Imperial Palace, Tokyo: no reservation was needed for the opening from 21 March 2026 to 29 March 2026 (entry 9:00–15:30), but you queued at Sakashita Gate, bags were checked, and the Imperial Household Agency warned that reaching the gate from the nearest station could take nearly 30 minutes. The spring 2027 dates had not been announced on 8 October 2026.

Month-by-month booking checklist
October 2026: choose a 10–14 day window and your bases, book refundable rooms and write down every free-cancellation deadline, and compare flights, especially if your dates overlap Easter.
November 2026: book flights if you haven't already, and note when your must-do attractions go on sale. Optional: make SmartEX one-year requests for the main Shinkansen journey.
December 2026 and January 2027: the first private forecasts appear. Compare several companies with the JMA normals, but don't move bookings yet.
February 2027: forecasts start to agree, so decide which city comes first. On 1 February 2027 at 10:00 Japan time, JR seats go on sale for travel on 1 March 2027.
March 2027: on 1 March 2027 at 10:00 Japan time, JR seats go on sale for travel on 1 April 2027. Watch for the Shinjuku Gyoen and Japan Mint announcements and book as soon as they open, and cancel any backup rooms before their deadlines.

Questions about this guide
Can I book for peak cherry blossom in 2027 now?
No one knows the 2027 date yet, and no official forecast exists. Book a 10–14 day window based on past dates, keep the rooms refundable, and refine the order of cities in February or March 2027 when the private forecasts have settled.
Is a non-refundable hotel rate worth it for a cherry blossom trip?
We don't think so. Full bloom in the same city can move by about two weeks from year to year, as Tokyo did between 22 March 2021 and 4 April 2024, and the flexibility of a free-cancellation rate is worth more than the saving.
Does Easter make Japan itself more crowded?
Not directly, because Easter isn't a holiday in Japan. It does push up demand for flights and hotels from Europe. Japan's own crowds peak around the 20 March 2027 to 22 March 2027 three-day weekend and on bloom weekends.
I can only travel in mid-April 2027. Is it too late for cherry blossoms?
Not necessarily. From 2021 to 2026, Sendai's full bloom came as late as 11 April and Sapporo's between 21 April and 27 April, and the Japan Mint in Osaka opens in mid-April for late-blooming varieties. Check Golden Week dates if you plan around Sapporo.
