Practical tips

The essentials

Choose the island first.

For a main-island trip arriving at Naha, compare the city base with the northern stops you want to reach. Ishigaki and Miyako have their own direct air connections: match the island and arrival airport before choosing accommodation. A transport plan starting at Naha is not a plan for a stay on another island.

Best time to visit

Okinawa has a humid subtropical climate, long summers and mild winters. Rain and typhoons can change outdoor plans.

Naha Airport is the main flight hub. Some other islands, including Ishigaki and Miyako, also have direct air connections.

Getting around

Yui Rail connects Naha Airport with the monorail corridor through Naha and Urasoe. Use that corridor when comparing a Naha base; northern main-island outings and trips to other islands need separate transport plans. Compare the outward and return journey before choosing a bus, taxi or rental car. Ferry services can be affected by weather.
