Okinawa transport, checked from Japan
Naha to Churaumi Aquarium by bus
The easy answer is not one bus number. It is choosing the service whose boarding point, payment rule and return run fit your day.

Japan-side verdict
The 15-second answer
Use a direct bus when Churaumi is the main event. Choose a sightseeing bus when you want a fixed northern route with stops already organised. Compare a car only when you are building your own multi-stop day.
Conditions that change the answer
- Best for
- Travellers staying in Naha who want one aquarium day without driving.
- Skip if
- The live return service leaves too early, your hotel is far from the boarding point, or you want several self-chosen northern stops.
Choose by traveller type
- Car, bus or train
- Direct bus for Churaumi alone. Tour bus for a fixed route. Rental car for a flexible loop.
- What Google Maps misses
- A map pin does not show the return-seat risk, boarding rules or the difference between a direct trip and a transfer-heavy loop.
The short answer
A direct bus is the sensible default when Churaumi Aquarium is the main event. The aquarium uses about three hours by express bus from Naha Airport as a planning figure, while its car estimate is about two hours. Rapid schedules can be shorter, but traffic still matters.
Choose the return first. A perfect outbound bus is not useful if its return leaves before you are ready or from a stop you have not found.- 01 · StartCentral Naha stopAsahibashi or Kencho Kitaguchi

Current direct choices
Start with your boarding point, not the bus brand
Okinawa Airport Shuttle
Useful from Naha Airport or Asahibashi beside Naha Bus Terminal. The operator publishes rapid and regular runs, a current fare table and several payment methods. Advance booking is recommended, but walk-up boarding is possible when seats remain.
Best for: a clearly published visitor-facing route.Yanbaru Express Bus
Useful when its airport or Kencho Kitaguchi stop fits your hotel. The operator says no advance reservation is required and accepts payment when boarding, but a full express bus cannot carry standing passengers.
Best for: a direct public-bus day with a simple stop.Highway Bus 117
Useful from Naha Airport or Asahibashi/Naha Bus Terminal. It runs as a public highway bus with no advance reservation and uses the local-bus payment flow rather than the Airport Shuttle's booking system.
Best for: a direct route from Naha Bus Terminal.Japan-side source check

| Service | Central Naha boarding | Adult one-way | Reservation and payment | Latest return checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Highway Bus 117 | Asahibashi / Naha Bus Terminal | ¥2,770 from Naha Bus Terminal; ¥2,880 from Naha Airport | No advance reservation. Pay when leaving by cash or OKICA. Suica-family cards are not accepted. | 17:22 from Kinen Koen Mae; scheduled for Asahibashi at 19:25 and Naha Airport at 19:34. |
| Yanbaru Express Bus | Kencho Kitaguchi | ¥1,900 from Kencho Kitaguchi; ¥2,000 from Naha Airport | No reservation. Pay when boarding by cash, supported credit card, QR payment or electronic money. OKICA is not accepted. | 17:15 from Kinen Koen Mae; scheduled for Kencho Kitaguchi at 19:30 and Naha Airport at 19:45. |
| Okinawa Airport Shuttle | Asahibashi / Naha Bus Terminal Mae | ¥2,400 from the Naha area | Advance booking is recommended. Walk-up boarding is possible if seats remain; pay by cash, supported credit card, electronic money or QR payment. | 18:00 reaches Asahibashi at 20:48 but does not continue to the airport. The latest airport-bound run checked leaves at 16:00 and is scheduled to arrive at 18:58. |
These are scheduled values, not a guarantee. Reopen the operator page for your date and choose an earlier return when a flight, connection or fixed hotel check-in would make the final run unsafe.

What the Japanese operator pages add to the English overview
The destination page identifies the transport modes. The operator pages supply the details that decide whether a same-day return is workable.

| Decision | Verified finding | Source basis | What it changes for the traveller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Which direct service fits central Naha? | Route 117 and the Airport Shuttle use the Asahibashi area, while Yanbaru Express uses Kencho Kitaguchi. | Japanese route and operator pages | Choose by the stop nearest the hotel, not by bus brand alone. |
| What will one adult pay? | The checked one-way fares differ by operator and boarding point; they are not interchangeable estimates. | Japanese operator fare tables | Use the dated operator fare for the chosen stop instead of an undated blog or route aggregator. |
| Can you board and pay as expected? | Reservation and payment rules differ: Route 117 uses the local-bus flow, the Airport Shuttle recommends advance booking, and Yanbaru accepts several cashless methods but not OKICA. | Japanese operator help and payment pages | Prepare the payment method for the selected service and do not transfer one operator's rule to another. |
| Does the final return reach the airport? | The latest departure shown by an operator may terminate in central Naha rather than continue to Naha Airport. | Japanese operator and combined timetables | Choose the return before the outbound bus, especially when a flight or fixed connection depends on it. |

Return-first planning
Build the day backwards from Naha
- Night before
Screenshot the live outbound and return tables. Confirm the stop name "Kinen Koen Mae" and the operator's payment rule.
- Before boarding
Arrive early enough to find the exact stop. Keep a second service in mind because non-reserved express buses can fill.
- At Churaumi
Locate the Naha-bound stop before entering the aquarium. Set a leave-by time that includes the walk through Ocean Expo Park.
- Before the final option
Recheck traffic and service notices. Do not wait for the last possible run when a missed flight or hotel check-in is at stake.
Three honest choices
Direct bus, organised tour or rental car?
Choose it for one main stop
- More aquarium time than a multi-stop tour may allow
- No driving documents, pickup or parking
- Return time and seat availability still control the day
Choose it for several fixed highlights
- One booking can bundle several northern stops
- Less route reading and no driving
- Each stop follows the tour's clock
Choose it for a northern loop
- Useful for Kouri, beaches and flexible meal stops
- Can suit a group once complete costs are compared
- Documents, cover, fatigue and weather can veto it

Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct bus from Naha to Churaumi Aquarium?
Yes. Current direct services include Okinawa Airport Shuttle and Yanbaru Express Bus, with additional operators shown on Ocean Expo Park's combined timetable. Check the live table for your date because operators and times can change.
How long does the bus from Naha to Churaumi take?
The aquarium's official access guide uses approximately three hours by express bus from Naha Airport as a planning figure. Some rapid services publish shorter scheduled times, while traffic can extend the trip.
Do I need to reserve a bus seat?
Rules depend on the service. Okinawa Airport Shuttle allows direct boarding when seats are available. Yanbaru Express says advance reservation is not required, but standing is not allowed and a full bus can leave you behind. Recheck the operator page before travel.
Is a Churaumi day tour better than the direct bus?
Choose a direct bus when the aquarium is your main goal and you want more control over your visit. A tour can be better when you also want fixed stops such as Cape Manzamo or American Village and prefer one booking.
Should I rent a car just for Churaumi Aquarium?
Not necessarily. A direct return bus is credible for one main stop. A rental gains value when the same day includes several northern beaches, Kouri Island or luggage that makes transfers difficult.
