What to know first
For the simplest car-free trip, stay in Naha near a Yui Rail station: of the five bases this page compares (Naha, Chatan, Onna, Uruma and Motobu), it's the only one with urban rail, and buses leave it in several directions. Choose Chatan when the waterfront itself is the holiday, an Onna resort only if that exact hotel has the airport and route stops you need, and Motobu only when most of your days are in the north. Whichever area you choose, check the exact hotel's stop, walk to the lobby and last usable return before paying.

- Do you need easy transit buffers for flight delays or a late-night arrival? A delayed flight, small children or an early start points towards Naha.
- Do your days cluster in Naha or north of it? Count them on a map before describing the trip as an island tour.
- Will you travel along a single corridor or head out in different directions? One corridor can support a bus-first base. Several directions need a hub or a car comparison.
- Does the exact hotel have a usable stop for arrival and daily trips? These are separate questions and may involve different services.
- Would heat, showers, children, mobility needs or luggage make transfers materially harder? If two apply together, add time and a fallback rather than relying on the cleanest map route.

The airport limousine's Area DE route (to Motobu) ended on 31 March 2026, and Areas AB and E are suspended, so an older overview or the January timetable does not establish a current Motobu service. Area D is not a replacement route to Motobu or Ocean Expo Park. Check separate northern bus or Shuttle timetables for your travel date; the northern Shuttle does not serve Chatan.
From 15 October 2026 through 31 January 2027, the Okinawa Airport Shuttle suspends service #17 (14:40 from Naha Airport) and service #22 (17:55 from Bise Fukugi Tree Road, 18:00 from Kinen Koen Mae). Other runs continue. The last return reaching the airport is #18, leaving Kinen Koen Mae at 16:00 and arriving at Naha Airport at 18:58; #20 leaves at 17:00 but ends at Asahibashi, not the airport. Read the suspension notice and the dated timetable.
Worked example: four nights, no car, one Churaumi day
Two adults, weekday timetables from 19 October 2026. The plan: arrive at 13:30, one Churaumi day, one Naha evening out, two quiet days, fly out at 17:00. The table shows the bus or rail cost for two, from the base.

Fares to and from Mihama American Village Entrance use the higher of the two designated-stop fares, because the operator's 19 October 2026 fare table doesn't list that stop. The Onna Churaumi fare is from the Shuttle's fare chart (checked 8 October 2026).
Verdict: Naha is cheapest and has the most fallbacks. Motobu costs a little more but only works if most of the trip is in the north, because Naha is 2 hours away. Onna (¥12,800 before any Naha evening) suits a resort stay if you skip Naha in the evening. Chatan comes to about ¥18,320, because every day trip starts with a Naha leg.

Confirm where the airport service stops, the walk to the lobby and which service handles each day out. Nobody should be left waiting at a Route 58 stop at dusk, hoping a bus comes.
Let the north be the trip
The temporary free circulation bus currently links listed hotels, local facilities and Ocean Expo Park through 31 January 2027. Treat it as a checked seasonal service, not permanent infrastructure.
Several directions trigger a car comparison
Kaichu Road one day, Ishikawa another and a separate beach day may each be possible. Together they create a new transfer problem every morning.

- Save the exact hotel pin. Do not stop at the town name.
- Find the correct stop and side of the road. A directional trunk-road stop can require a different walking route.
- Check the last realistic return trip in your direction. The final departure from a terminal may not be your final usable bus.
- Check the walking route with luggage. Check crossings, gradient, shade and the route from stop to lobby.
- Write down arrival and sightseeing separately. A direct airport service does not prove the daily route.
- Recheck seasonal notices close to travel. Temporary buses and weather disruption change the answer.

Heat and rain make public transit or taxis appealing without requiring a rental car
Comfort shapes the experience, but safety rules never change
An air-conditioned seat between outdoor stops is valuable in an Okinawan summer. A sightseeing coach provides that relief too, and on one fixed northern route it can remove parking, transfers and the need for an unfamiliar driver.

Yes, provided your specific hotel is directly served by both the airport bus and the local routes you need. Onna stretches across a long coastline, so check the exact bus stop name, the walk to the lobby, and the final return bus rather than relying on the town name alone.
Is Motobu practical without a car?
It can be a practical base if your plans focus on the north. Current official pages show direct routes from Naha city and Naha Airport, plus a temporary free local shuttle during the announced 2026–27 window. That said, heading back and forth to Naha takes time and depends strictly on bus schedules.
Is Uruma possible without a car?
Selected Uruma destinations are reachable by bus. A stay that visits different east-coast and island stops on separate days creates a new transfer problem each day, so a rental-car comparison becomes more useful.
Should I rent a car only if it rains?
Do not rely on finding a suitable car that morning. Stock, documents, child seats and branch access cannot be assumed, and heavy rain or poor visibility can be a reason to reduce the route instead of beginning unfamiliar left-side driving.

Should I stay in Naha, Chatan, Onna or Motobu without a car?
Naha is the default: Yui Rail reaches the airport in 11–16 minutes for ¥290–¥320, and every Churaumi bus starts there. Onna suits a resort stay: the Airport Shuttle costs ¥1,600–¥1,800 one way to the Onna beach stops, but the last weekday route 120 back from Naha Bus Terminal is 19:40. Motobu works only if most days are in the north. Chatan suits waterfront evenings, accepting a 50-minute bus into Naha for most day trips.
How close should my Okinawa hotel be to a usable bus stop?
Within about 10 minutes' walk, with a pedestrian crossing to the stop for the direction you need. On Route 58, the northbound and southbound stops are on opposite sides of a four-lane road. A limousine door stop is better than either: in Chatan that means La'gent, Hilton, LEQU, DoubleTree or Chatan Gateway, and in Onna the stop list runs from Moon Beach to the Ritz-Carlton.
How do I check the last return to an Okinawa hotel without a car?
Open the operator's timetable PDF for the right direction and day type, because weekday, Saturday and Sunday timetables differ. From 19 October 2026 the weekday last buses are route 120 from Naha Bus Terminal at 19:40 to the Onna coast, route 28 from Naha Bus Terminal at 21:30 to Mihama, and from Churaumi Shuttle #18 at 16:00 (to the airport) or #20 at 17:00 (to Asahibashi). Add 15 minutes for the walk to the stop.
How should airport access affect an Okinawa hotel choice without a car?
Check the airport leg on both your actual arrival and departure times. Naha passes at any hour Yui Rail runs. Chatan has the limousine at 14:10 only, or route 120 until 19:30 on weekdays. Onna resorts have Area C/CD limousines at 12:00, 13:50, 15:10 and 18:00, plus the Shuttle until 17:00. For Motobu, the last Shuttle from the airport that reaches Ocean Expo Park is #19 at 15:30 (due 18:26), because #17 is suspended until 31 January 2027 and #21 at 17:00 ends at Nago City Hall. Landing later means a taxi or a Naha first night.
