Airport to your hotel: Narita, Haneda and Kansai by train, bus or taxi

Checked against 36 official sources. 12 minute read.

What to know first

Pick the ride that gets you to the station or bus stop nearest your hotel, not the airport's fastest headline train. With one manageable case each, a direct train to that station is usually simplest. With two large bags each, small children, or a hotel far from any station, a limousine bus that loads your bags into the hold, or a fixed-fare taxi shared by three or four people, is often the better daytime choice.

Next step: Find your hotel's nearest station and check whether an airport bus stops at or near the hotel. Then use the airport section below to pick one main option and one backup.

ItemTravel options
Two large cases each, or bags you can't lift onto a rack

Two large cases each, or bags you can't lift onto a rack: take an airport limousine bus to a stop at or near your hotel. Staff load bags into the hold. Tokyo's Airport Limousine takes up to two checked pieces per person, each up to 50 × 60 × 120 cm and 30 kg; Kansai's KATE buses take two pieces per person, 30 kg in total.

Small children or a stroller

Small children or a stroller: take the bus, or a direct reserved-seat train. You board once, get off once and have a guaranteed seat.

Hotel next to a major station (Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ueno, Shinagawa, Namba, Kyoto)

Hotel next to a major station (Tokyo, Shinjuku, Ueno, Shinagawa, Namba, Kyoto): take the direct train that stops there. A transfer with bags often costs more time than the "fastest" train saves.

Arriving into a weekday morning or evening rush

Arriving into a weekday morning or evening rush: take a reserved-seat train (Narita Express, Skyliner, HARUKA or rapi:t) or a bus. Our judgement: ordinary commuter trains fill with standing passengers, which is hard with suitcases.

Three or four people with luggage

Three or four people with luggage: compare one taxi with four fares (examples in the next section). Fixed-fare taxis exist at all three airports, but tolls are extra and the size of the car matters.

Hotel nowhere near a station

Hotel nowhere near a station: take a taxi, or a bus plus a short taxi ride. A bus that ends at a station still leaves you with the last stretch.

RouteCosts and conditions
Narita to Shinjuku or Shibuya (Zone D)

Narita to Shinjuku or Shibuya (Zone D): the fixed taxi fare is ¥31,500 via the Keiyo Road, plus expressway tolls (Narita Airport doesn't publish an amount, so ask the driver). Four Narita Express seats to Shinjuku cost 4 × ¥3,330 = ¥13,320.

Haneda to Shinjuku

Haneda to Shinjuku: the fixed fare is ¥9,000 (Shibuya ¥8,500; Chiyoda Ward, around Tokyo Station, ¥7,600), plus tolls. Four Keikyu-plus-JR train tickets cost 4 × ¥590 = ¥2,360.

Kansai Airport to Osaka Umeda

Kansai Airport to Osaka Umeda: reserved fixed-fare taxis start at ¥16,400, plus tolls (the airport's own fare estimates allow about ¥2,260 for the bridge and expressway). Four limousine bus tickets to Osaka Station cost 4 × ¥1,800 = ¥7,200.

Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station

Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station: from ¥23,800, plus tolls. Four discounted HARUKA tickets (foreign visitors only) cost 4 × ¥2,200 = ¥8,800.

Our reading

Our reading: from Narita, a taxi for four costs more than double the train before tolls; it earns its price when your hotel is awkward to reach or your group can't manage bags through stations. From Kansai the gap is smaller.

Narita Airport (NRT)

Narita is far from central Tokyo, so choose by where you're staying. Terminal 1 is a 5-minute walk from its station. From Airport Terminal 2·3 Station (空港第2ビル駅), allow 5 minutes to Terminal 2 and 10 to Terminal 3.

Narita Express

Narita Express (N'EX, JR East): direct to Tokyo Station (fastest 53 minutes), then Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Yokohama. One dated exception: because of JR East tunnel works between Tokyo and Shinagawa, N'EX trains leaving the airport from 18:45 on Friday 6 November and every N'EX train on Saturday 7 November 2026 end at Tokyo Station. From there, take the Chuo Line for Shinjuku, the Yamanote Line for Shibuya or Shinagawa, or the Tokaido Line for Yokohama. Arrivals on Sunday 8 November are not affected. JR East lists the trains on its works notice (Japanese only). Ordinary-car fares (basic fare plus express ticket): Tokyo ¥3,140; Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku ¥3,330; Yokohama ¥4,480. JR East's weekday timetable for October 2026 shows 81 to 101 minutes to Shinjuku, most trains 85 to 90.

The N'EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket for visitors costs ¥5,200 and is valid for 14 days. Reserved seats go on sale one month ahead; an unreserved ticket, at the same price, lets you use any vacant seat. Luggage spaces have dial locks and are first come, first served. Best for: hotels near Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinagawa or Yokohama.

Keisei Skyliner

Keisei Skyliner: all seats are reserved. It runs nonstop to Nippori (fastest 36 minutes), then Keisei-Ueno (about 41 minutes). The fare to Ueno or Nippori is ¥2,580 with paper tickets (¥1,280 base fare plus a ¥1,300 Skyliner ticket). Keisei notes that fares differ when using an approved IC card. Each car has a luggage space. Buy the Skyliner ticket before you board.

Best for Skyliner: Ueno and Asakusa, or a link to the JR Yamanote Line at Nippori (transfer at ticket gate B with an IC card or a JR ticket). Holders of the Skyliner & Tokyo Subway Ticket must transfer at Ueno, not Nippori.

Access Express

Keisei Access Express: no express ticket is needed. It runs through onto the Toei Asakusa Line, giving a direct ride towards Oshiage, Asakusa, Nihombashi, Shimbashi and Shinagawa. Keisei gives Narita to Oshiage as 46 minutes and ¥1,190. There are no reserved seats. Best for: light packers near an Asakusa Line station who want the cheapest direct ride.

Limousine bus

Airport Limousine Bus: routes serve Tokyo Station, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Ginza, Shibuya, Odaiba, Roppongi and Akasaka, and more. Some stop at hotel doors: the Shinjuku route serves the Keio Plaza, Hilton Tokyo, Park Hyatt and others, though not every bus calls at every stop. Fares are ¥3,600 to Shinjuku and ¥3,100 to Tokyo Station.

Scheduled times are about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 50 minutes to Tokyo Station (Yaesu North Gate), depending on terminal and departure, and about 1 hour 45 minutes from Terminal 1 to Shinjuku Station. Buy at the bus counter or ticket machine before boarding (counters take credit cards), or reserve online and show the QR code. IC cards work on some routes only. Best for: heavy luggage, families and hotels with their own stop.

Taxi

Fixed-fare taxi: no booking is needed. Examples via the Keiyo Road: Zone C (Chuo, Chiyoda, Taito, Bunkyo, Arakawa) ¥29,000; Zone D (Shinjuku, Shibuya, most of Minato and Shinagawa, Toshima, Nakano, Meguro, Ota) ¥31,500. Tolls are extra, and a surcharge applies from 22:00 to 5:00. Confirm the fixed fare with the driver before you set off.

Haneda Airport (HND)

Keikyu lists estimated journeys from Haneda Terminal 3 of 11 minutes to Shinagawa and 20 to Tokyo Station; from Terminals 1 and 2 it lists 14 and 23 minutes respectively. These are travel estimates, not a guaranteed connection. Most international flights use Terminal 3; some use Terminal 2.

Keikyu Line

Keikyu Line: at Terminal 3, the gates for central Tokyo and Yokohama are in the 2nd-floor Arrival Lobby. Keikyu's estimates from Terminal 3 are Shinagawa 11 minutes, Tokyo 20, Shibuya 23, Yokohama 23, Shinjuku 30 and Asakusa 34. Haneda Airport's estimates are longer (about 45 minutes to Shibuya and 50 to Shinjuku), so plan with the range. Asakusa is direct; Shibuya and Shinjuku need a transfer.

The Keikyu fare to Shinagawa is ¥330 (¥327 by IC card), and to Shinjuku via JR ¥590. There are no reserved seats. Ticket machines take cash or credit cards. Keikyu also accepts contactless credit-card taps at its gates, but children are then charged adult fares. Best for: Shinagawa, Asakusa, Yokohama, and anywhere one easy transfer from Shinagawa.

Tokyo Monorail

Tokyo Monorail: it runs to Hamamatsucho (about 20 minutes, per Haneda Airport), where you change to JR lines. Its Terminal 3 gates are in the 2nd-floor Arrival Lobby. The fare from Terminal 3 to Monorail Hamamatsucho is ¥520 for adults (¥519 by IC card) and ¥260 for children. The ticket machines don't take credit cards, so carry yen or an IC card.

On weekends, holidays and other selected dates through 31 March 2027, the Monorail & Yamanote Line Discount Ticket costs ¥590 to any Yamanote Line station via Hamamatsucho, against ordinary fares from ¥680. It is sold only on the day of use, for one one-way journey; stopovers are not permitted. Best for: hotels near Hamamatsucho or Shiodome, or along the JR Yamanote Line.

Limousine and express buses

Limousine and express buses: stops are on the 1st floor of each terminal (at Terminal 3, follow the bus signs from the 2nd-floor access hall). Haneda Airport lists about 35 minutes to Shinjuku Station West Exit and to Tokyo Station. Many hotel-district routes were suspended when we checked, including Akasaka and Roppongi; Hibiya, Shiodome and Ginza; Shinagawa, Ebisu and Shiba; Toranomon; Akihabara and Kudan; and Otemachi and Marunouchi. Confirm your stop is running.

Taxi

Taxi: at Terminal 3 the stand is on the 1st floor (stop 21), reached via the 2nd- and 3rd-floor access hall. Fixed fares need no booking and cover most of the 23 wards, but not Minato, Chuo, Shinagawa, Ota, Meguro or Koto, which are metered. Tolls are extra, and a higher fixed fare applies from 22:00 to 5:00 (Shinjuku ¥10,700). App-booked taxis use separate stands (Terminal 3: P5 car park, 8th floor).

Metered taxis in Tokyo's 23 wards, Musashino and Mitaka have charged ¥500 for the first 1.0 km and ¥100 for every 232 m after that since 20 April 2026, with 20% more from 22:00 to 5:00.

Kansai International Airport (KIX)

Kansai-airport Station connects to the 2nd floor of Terminal 1 and the Aeroplaza. From Terminal 2, take the free shuttle bus to the Aeroplaza (7 to 9 minutes); KATE buses stop at both terminals.

JR HARUKA (limited express)

JR HARUKA (limited express): direct to Tennoji (about 30 minutes), Osaka (about 45), Shin-Osaka (about 50) and Kyoto. For Kyoto, Kansai Airport lists about 75 minutes and JR West's timetable shows about 78 to 80 minutes for midday trains; early-morning trains take longer, so plan on about 80 minutes. You need a basic fare plus an express ticket; ICOCA covers only the basic fare.

Foreign visitors entering as temporary visitors can buy a discounted HARUKA One-way Ticket online before arriving (Tennoji ¥1,300, Osaka or Shin-Osaka ¥1,800, Kobe ¥2,000, Kyoto ¥2,200) and collect it at a ticket machine (passport with an IC chip) or the ticket office. JR West says it isn't sold in Japan. HARUKA has reserved and unreserved cars; JR West's English pages don't describe its on-board luggage space. Best for: Kyoto, Shin-Osaka (for a next-day bullet train) and Tennoji.

JR Kansai Airport Rapid

JR Kansai Airport Rapid: no express ticket is needed and IC cards work. It takes about 45 minutes to Tennoji and 65 to Osaka, with no reserved seats. Best for: light packers heading to Tennoji or Osaka (Umeda).

Nankai rapi:t

Nankai rapi:t: every seat is reserved; the fastest train takes 34 minutes to Namba (rapi:t β about 39). The basic fare of ¥970 plus a limited express ticket of ¥700 (Regular Seat) or ¥910 (Super Seat) makes ¥1,670 or ¥1,880 in total. Buying the express ticket on board adds ¥300, and Nankai's online ticketless service is ¥150 cheaper. There are overhead racks and a luggage space. Best for: Namba, Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori hotels.

Nankai Airport Express

Nankai Airport Express: about 43 to 45 minutes to Namba for the ¥970 basic fare, with no reserved seats.

KATE limousine bus

KATE limousine bus: buy at the Terminal 1, 1st-floor ticket window (07:00 to 21:00) or a ticket machine (credit cards accepted); some routes also take IC or contactless cards tapped on board, so check your balance first. Osaka Station (Hankyu Sanbangai) takes about 60 minutes for ¥1,800, first come, first served. Kyoto Station Hachijo Exit takes about 1 hour 25 to 30 minutes for ¥2,800. Two bags per person go in the hold. Best for: heavy bags, hotels near a bus stop and the south side of Kyoto Station.

Taxi

Taxi: stands are on the 1st floor of Terminal 1 (regular taxis at stand 5; reserved taxis at 1 and 7). Fixed-fare taxis need advance reservation: from ¥16,400 to Umeda, ¥22,000 to Kobe Sannomiya and ¥23,800 to Kyoto Station, plus tolls. The airport also lists a shared shuttle to Kyoto at ¥4,300 per person, booked by noon two days ahead.

Questions about this guide

Can I ride from the airport with just a credit card?

Partly. Keikyu accepts contactless credit-card taps at its gates (children are charged adult fares this way), and Nankai offers tap-to-ride at selected stations, also at adult fares only. JR express trains and the Skyliner need tickets, which machines sell by card. Tokyo Monorail's ticket machines don't take credit cards.

Do toddlers need a ticket on airport trains and buses?

Usually not on local trains or buses, but there are exceptions: KATE charges a child fare for a second infant or one using their own seat, and Nankai charges a child fare when a toddler rides a reserved-seat limited express such as rapi:t. Check the operator's child rules before you buy.

Should I book my airport train before I fly?

Only for a discount, such as the HARUKA One-way Ticket for visitors (¥1,800 to Osaka, ¥2,200 to Kyoto), which isn't sold in Japan, or for a guaranteed seat at a busy time. Immigration queues make a fixed departure a gamble, so an unreserved N'EX ticket or a Skyliner ticket bought at the airport is often easier.

Is Skyliner or Narita Express better from Narita?

It depends on your hotel. Skyliner is quicker and cheaper to Ueno or Nippori (¥2,580, fastest 36 minutes to Nippori). Narita Express is direct to Tokyo Station, Shinagawa, Shibuya and Shinjuku (¥3,140 to Tokyo, ¥3,330 to Shinjuku). Pick the one that stops nearest your hotel and saves a transfer with bags.

How much is a taxi from Haneda to central Tokyo?

Fixed fares from Haneda are ¥9,000 to Shinjuku, ¥8,500 to Shibuya and ¥7,600 to Chiyoda Ward, plus tolls, by day. Minato, Chuo, Shinagawa, Ota, Meguro and Koto wards are metered instead: ¥500 for the first 1.0 km, then ¥100 per 232 m, with 20% more from 22:00 to 5:00.
