Naha forgives a delayed flight more easily
Arrival-day reality
Yui Rail links Naha Airport with the city. American Village's official guide gives about 40 minutes by car from the airport, but a bus journey also depends on the current run and your hotel stop.
Rail, taxi or a short city transfer
The city gives you several fallback choices. It is the safer first-night base when arrival time is uncertain.
Match your flight with live bus and transfer schedules
Buy an airport limousine ticket before boarding. Online purchase is available, and designated counters sell tickets until 10 minutes before departure. Cash is not accepted onboard, and a full bus cannot take more passengers. Keep a taxi cost or private transfer as the fallback.

Settle in after the flight, walk Kokusai-dori, visit Shuri, then take a direct bus or tour for one longer day.
American Village
Move once, then spend the final evenings by the water without commuting back to Naha after dinner.
For a short visit, a hotel change may take too much of the time available. Compare it with the journeys saved. If the plan expands into several northern stops, revisit the bus or rental-car decision.
Worked example: the same four nights from each base
Two adults, four nights, weekday timetables from 19 October 2026, no car. The plan: arrive at 15:00, spend one day at Shuri and one at Churaumi Aquarium, two evenings on Kokusai-dori and one sunset evening at American Village, then fly home at 18:00.

Fares to and from Mihama American Village Entrance use the higher of the two designated-stop fares, because the operator's 19 October 2026 fare table doesn't list this stop (checked 8 October 2026).
Verdict: for this trip, Naha saves about ¥12,500 and eight hours for two people. Chatan wins only when most evenings are spent at the waterfront and you would make no more than one or two trips into Naha.
Split-stay check: two nights in Naha (Shuri, Churaumi, Kokusai-dori), then two in Chatan (sunset), costs ¥580 + ¥2,000 + ¥7,600 + one move by bus 28 (about ¥1,680 for two) + route 120 to the airport (about ¥1,800) = about ¥13,660. That's slightly less than Naha-only, and you wake up by the sea twice. The split pays off whenever it removes at least one evening return trip and the move happens on a day with no fixed plans.

Can I take a bus from Naha Airport to American Village?
Yes. Route 120 and route 143 are different from the airport limousine. The timetable from 19 October 2026 lists route 120 from airport stop 5 up to 18 times on weekdays, from 8:40 to 19:30, reaching Mihama American Village Iriguchi about 64–94 minutes later for about ¥900. The limousine has one airport departure at 14:10 to Chatan hotels and requires a ticket bought before boarding. Use the timetable for your actual date.
Does American Village have a train station?
No. Yui Rail serves only Naha and Urasoe. For American Village and farther trips, you will need a bus, taxi, transfer, or rental car.
Should you split your stay between Naha and Chatan?
Yes, when the Chatan nights would otherwise mean two or more evening trips. Each trip saved is worth about ¥1,680 and 1 hour 40 minutes for two people. Do the city and Churaumi days from Naha first, then move once by bus 28 (about 50 minutes, about ¥840 per person). On a three-night trip the move usually costs more time than it saves.
Which base is better for Churaumi Aquarium?
Naha. The Airport Shuttle and Yanbaru Express board at Kencho Kitaguchi, a short walk from Prefectural Office station, and route 117 boards at Naha Bus Terminal. The fastest Shuttle (rapid #7, 10:34) reaches the aquarium stop at 12:15. None of these buses stops in Chatan, so from American Village you first ride about 50 minutes back into Naha.

For bars and late dinners, choose Naha. Kokusai-dori, Makishi and Sakaemachi (near Asato station) are walkable, so there's no last bus to catch. For a sunset beach and waterfront restaurants, choose American Village: Sunset Beach and Araha Beach are walkable from Mihama. From Naha, the last weekday bus 28 back from Mihama leaves at 21:05.
What time is the last bus between Naha and American Village?
On weekdays from 19 October 2026, the last bus 28 from Naha Bus Terminal to Mihama American Village Entrance leaves at 21:30 (due 22:20), and the last one the other way leaves Mihama at 21:05 (due 21:50). After that, a taxi is the only option, so plan dinners around those two times.
How much does a day in Naha cost if I stay at American Village?
About ¥1,680 for two people in bus fares (bus 28, about ¥840 each way per adult), plus about 1 hour 40 minutes on the bus. Add Yui Rail day tickets (¥1,000 each) for Shuri.
