Money / Paying in Japan
Cash or card in Japan? Use three payment lanes
The question forces a choice Japan does not. Carry a card, Japanese cash and, when useful, an IC-card balance — then give each one a specific job.
Japan-side verdict
The 15-second answer
Use a card where the exact merchant accepts it, keep Japanese cash for cash-specific situations and payment failure, and treat an IC card as a convenience balance rather than universal money.
- The payment order
- Exact place or route → card plus cash fallback → IC convenience → compatible ATM
- What a payment logo misses
- A general cashless label cannot reveal a remote inn's rule, one bus operator's top-up method, issuer authorisation or the DCC offer on an ATM.

If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Where you are | Useful starting lane | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Major hotel, department store or large urban business | Card is often practical | Confirm the exact merchant and your card when payment must work. |
| Small independent shop or remote lodging | Some are cash-only | Ask before arrival or ordering; do not infer every small business. |
| Short-distance transport or a local bus | The operator decides | Check the route's cash, IC-card and top-up rule. |
| IC-card purchase, tap or top-up | A convenience balance | Confirm where it works and how that specific system accepts top-ups. |
| Foreign-card ATM | Use a published overseas-card route | Check support, hours, fees, limit and the issuer's own conditions. |
JNTO describes broad international-card acceptance. Broad is not universal, and a matching logo does not promise that a particular issuer will authorise the transaction.
- Best for
- Visitors deciding what to carry before Japan, including people worried about card acceptance, ATMs, local transport or mobile wallets.
- Skip if
- You only need one ATM network's current limit or a device-specific mobile-Suica setup. Those require narrower live checks.
