Going out to try a recommended dish

That evening, Haruru took a taxi to a restaurant serving an unusual sweet-and-sour pork dish. Someone had especially wanted her to try it, and it was her first taste of that dish.

Cool meat and a crisp coating

Her first surprise was seeing the pork among ice. Unlike the warm sweet-and-sour pork she knew, the meat was cool and the outside crisp.

Haruru compared the coating to crème brûlée. She felt it was a difference that was difficult to convey without tasting the dish.

Congee and fried tofu with sweet chilli sauce

She also had congee and fried tofu with sweet chilli sauce. Looking back, she described the Chinese dinner itself as a relatively modest meal.
