A first solo sushi meal at 鮨芳

Haruru wanted sushi and decided to go alone to a traditional shop for the first time. The meal was enjoyable; the unexpected conversation as she was leaving made the visit feel even more memorable.

From haruru.1002’s account shared in September 2023, edited with permission.

Through the curtain, a little nervously

The entrance curtain shows the name 鮨芳, also visible inside the shop. When Haruru stepped through it, there were no other customers. She asked whether it was all right to come in alone and was invited to choose a seat.

She had wanted to sit at the counter, but did not quite have the courage that time. The photograph of the interior shows the counter and the wooden chairs in the quiet room.

Special sushi and a bottle of beer

Haruru chose the special sushi set (特上寿司) from the options she was given. The photograph shows nigiri, gunkan and rolls arranged on a wooden board with a bowl of soup.

She ordered beer and was served a bottle, pouring it herself. She enjoyed the sushi toppings and the tender squid tentacles served as an appetiser.

A conversation changed the end of the visit

When she asked to pay, the chef asked whether the sushi had suited her taste. She explained that she loved sushi and had come because she wanted a delicious meal. From there, the conversation became lively.

The earlier silence had felt difficult, but she left feeling that the solo outing had been fresh and enjoyable. She promised to try the counter next time and wanted to return.
