What to know first

Plan Ginzan Onsen and Zao as an overnight trip, and check the transport and weather before setting out. Ginzan's winter restrictions require particular attention to your arrival and return; Zao's frost trees and ropeway depend on conditions.

Start with the Ginzan admission slot and return transport, then check the Zao operating calendar before booking lodging.

Getting there

From Tokyo, the Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa takes about 2 hours 20 minutes on the fastest train to Yamagata in the 2026-11 timetable; most take about 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours. Tokyo to Oishida takes about 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours 20 minutes. All Tsubasa seats are reserved. Check current timetables and fares with JR East.

From Sendai, the JR Senzan Line takes about 1 hour 20–30 minutes to Yamagata in the reviewed timetable. The Sendai–Yamagata highway bus is another option; seats are limited and passengers cannot board when it is full. From Yamagata Station, the Yamako bus to Zao Onsen leaves from stop 1 and also has limited seating.

From Oishida Station, Hanagasa Bus serves Ginzan Onsen: the adult fare is ¥1,000 one way, with no reservation, cash only and payment before boarding. One regular timetable example takes 36 minutes; seasonal express services from 1 December 2026 to 31 March 2027 include a 30-minute example. Snow and road conditions can disrupt services. Check the winter admission arrangements with the operator before travelling.

Ginzan's winter restrictions and shuttle

Day visitors arriving by car park at Taisho Roman-kan and take a reserved shuttle. Do not walk between the car park and Ginzan Onsen in winter.

Shuttles depart every 20 minutes: outbound from 09:00 to 18:00 and return from 09:10 to 19:30. Round-trip fares by outbound departure time (advance / same day if seats remain): 09:00 to before 11:00, ¥1,000 / ¥1,300; 11:00 to before 14:00, ¥700 / ¥1,000; 14:00 to 18:00, ¥1,200 / ¥1,500.

Advance booking closes at 17:00 Japan time the previous day and requires a credit card; a ¥165 system fee applies per booking. For 09:00–14:00 departures, the whole season goes on sale at 09:00 JST on 1 November 2026. For later departures, 2026-12 tickets go on sale at that time, 2027-01 tickets at 00:00 on 1 December 2026, and tickets for 1 February 2027–7 March 2027 at 00:00 on 1 January 2027. Same-day tickets are sold at machines at Taisho Roman-kan only if seats remain.

Your priority return boarding time is 90 minutes after your outbound departure. If you miss it, join the normal queue. Under the planned arrangements, public-bus passengers without an advance admission reservation transfer to a shuttle at Taisho Roman-kan; the official page says the final arrangements will be confirmed with the bus operator.

Zao's frost trees by day and night

2 Zao Ropeway rides reach the frost-tree area in as little as about 18 minutes. Weather can interrupt operations, so check before travelling. For the 2026–27 light-up, the official announcement lists 31 nights, 17:00–21:00, with the last ascent from Zao Sanroku at 19:45. The return fare is ¥4,600 for adults and ¥2,300 for children aged 6–11. Check the official calendar for the operating dates. Bad weather or collapsed frost trees can cancel the event, and visibility is not guaranteed.

The Night Cruiser tour is a separate experience on the same 31 nights, with departures at 17:00, 18:00, 19:00 and 20:00. Allow about 70–80 minutes and arrive 20 minutes before departure. The fare is ¥8,000 for adults and ¥7,000 for children aged 1 through elementary-school age, including the Sanroku Line return. Book online from 7 days before travel; phone bookings are not accepted. The snowcat does not go to Jizo Sancho.

Clothing and cold

Near the summit the temperature can be around or below −10°C. The prefectural tourism guide suggests a down coat or ski wear, thermal layers, warm trousers and leggings, a hat covering the ears, gloves, a neck warmer and heat packs. Use waterproof items where exposed. Stay within the safety ropes and do not touch the frost trees.

Rail passes and a two-day outline

Tsubasa requires a seat ticket even when using the JR EAST PASS. Check the pass's area and exclusions before booking. The pass covers JR buses within its area, excluding highway buses and some regular route buses. Our planning judgment: budget separately for Yamako and Hanagasa buses, the Ginzan shuttle and the Zao Ropeway because these are non-JR services.

One possible plan: on day one, travel via Oishida to Ginzan, allowing time for the admission and return arrangements, then stay overnight. On day two, travel to Zao Onsen via Yamagata and choose daytime frost-tree viewing or an evening event according to the operating calendar. Check all connections and lodging before booking.
