What to know first
Decide which kind of session you want before you book. The options are a short modern workshop for a finished-looking souvenir (from ¥6,600 for 60 minutes at TSUGU TSUGU), a traditional introduction where you do one stage on a partly prepared piece (¥22,000 for 90 minutes there), or a full natural-urushi repair of your own item, which can mean repeat visits or a studio schedule of three months or more. A short class cannot complete every stage of a traditional repair. Before paying, get in writing which materials are used, whether you can bring your own piece, when it can leave the studio, and whether it is decorative only or suitable for food.

Do not choose from the words traditional, lacquer or gold alone. Decide whether you want a finished-looking souvenir, a class that teaches one real stage of traditional kintsugi, or a full repair of your own vessel with natural urushi.
A full traditional repair is not a one-hour job. A short workshop may be modern, or it may use a piece prepared before you arrive. Both can be worthwhile when the method is clear.Key facts

The new Kyoto studio (up to 10 people) is already taking bookings for Traditional workshop sessions from 1 November 2026; Ebisu and Asakusa run it now.
- TSUGU TSUGU Kintsugi-style Workshop: 60 minutes, ¥6,600 per person, ages 6 and over. Ebisu takes up to 6 people and Asakusa up to 15. Epoxy and brass powder on small accessories, taken home the same day; not for tableware.
- TSUGU TSUGU regular class (your own piece): 90-minute classes in Ebisu or Asakusa. Repairing your own piece from start to finish takes about 10 sessions, which the studio says means staying in Japan for two to three months; on a shorter trip you practise stages rather than finish a piece. The Visitor Plan, for 1–4 classes, is ¥9,900 per class with no registration. If you will stay long enough for 10 classes, the member 10-class ticket comes to ¥63,800 in total, including the ¥11,000 registration and ¥3,300 one-year storage fee. Either way, the Tsugu Kit (¥9,800–22,000) is extra.
- TSUGU TSUGU professional repair: at least 3 months (the longest wait so far has been a year); no overseas shipping in or out, only Japan addresses; collect within one month of notice.
- Tomi Studio (Kyoto, 5 minutes from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station): Modern Kintsugi with modern materials (no natural lacquer), about 2 hours, ¥20,000; taught mainly in English; you can't bring your own item.
- Urujyu (Miyama, Kyoto Prefecture): a 2-hour basic course for ¥11,000 (small chips); a standard course of 3 × 2 hours for ¥33,000 plus a ¥15,400 kit.
- Viator 13441P60 (Minami-Aoyama): supplied plate, decorative only, minimum age 6. Its published product description was rechecked on 11 October 2026; no date or package inventory was selected.
Tomi Studio confirms English and Japanese for its Modern Kintsugi class. Other listings have their own language terms. The panel below describes the guide as a whole; it does not override a named workshop's confirmed support. For an unclear listing, ask whether support means an instructor, interpretation or written material for the exact product.
For both one-time workshops, the provider lists private room hire at the price of six people; an extra ¥5,500 per group may apply for a special date or time outside the listed slots. Its website’s 10% coupon cannot be used for workshops. These are conditional charges, not charges automatically added to every booking. No exhaustive overseas destination list or shipping price is stated in the checked workshop page.

Worked example: five days in Tokyo, flying home on Sunday
The situation: you land on Tuesday 10 November 2026, fly home on Sunday 15 November, and want real gold and urushi rather than a resin souvenir.
- Format: the TSUGU TSUGU Traditional Workshop (90 minutes, natural urushi, partly prepared vessel). A full repair of your own bowl takes at least 3 months at TSUGU TSUGU and can't be shipped abroad, so it doesn't fit this trip.
- When: book Thursday 12 November or earlier. The piece needs at least a day closed in its drying box at 20–30°C, so Thursday leaves Friday and Saturday for drying before you pack on Saturday night.
- Cost: ¥22,000 per person, so ¥44,000 for two people.
- If you can only do Saturday: take it home in the drying box and pack it unopened on Sunday, or choose shipping (about a week later, with a fee). Overseas shipping is offered, but a complete destination list and shipping fee were not published in the checked workshop description on 11 October 2026. Ask about your country and fee before booking.
- If you'd rather leave with a finished piece the same day: the 60-minute Kintsugi-style workshop (¥6,600, epoxy and brass) gives you that, but it isn't for food use and isn't traditional kintsugi.

More process ownership usually means more curing time, more hand-offs and less certainty that the object leaves with you that day.
Modern or streamlined method
Designed for a short visit and a finished-looking souvenir. It may use resin, adhesive or another easy-to-handle material system rather than every natural-lacquer stage.

TSUGU TSUGU describes a 90-minute tourist product that uses a prepared piece, but the exact 90-minute tourist product does not establish English support. Its regular multi-session class is a separate route, described as roughly two to three months over about ten sessions, with language support depending on the selected date or instructor. Professional repair is separate again and the standard repair guidance starts at a minimum of three months.

Urujyu in Miyama
Urujyu's current first-party class page establishes its Miyama Atelier and current short-course structure, including a two-hour basic course and the option to discuss schedule adjustments. It does not establish exact-date inventory.
Before booking, ask Urujyu about the language used in your lesson, the group size and your exact dates. An English website does not by itself confirm English-speaking staff for your session.
TSUGU TSUGU in Tokyo
Its exact 90-minute tourist product demonstrates an intermediate stage and lets visitors apply gold powder to a prepared piece, but that exact product does not establish English support. Regular-class language support is conditional. Its regular full repair takes roughly two to three months, which helps show what one session can honestly contain without transferring a language promise between products.

04 · Completion and hand-off
TSUGU TSUGU · 90-minute traditional workshop
The provider says the prepared workshop piece can leave the studio in three different ways: take it home the same day with a drying box, collect it after at least one day of drying, or ship it to your hotel or overseas about a week later. A shipping fee applies.
That workshop page does not publish an exhaustive country/region list, shipping amount or payment timing. Studio willingness to ship is also not the same as a hotel agreeing to receive and hold the parcel. Confirm that your hotel will receive and hold the parcel by verifying your guest name, exact delivery address, and holding window with them in advance.
TSUGU TSUGU · professional repair
The full repair service is a different product. The provider does not accept an overseas repair request by international inbound shipping: the vessel must be brought to its Ebisu or Asakusa studio. The repair page describes a minimum of three months in its standard guidance and lists express-service conditions separately. Ask the studio to confirm the exact service and completion estimate; do not treat either section as a guaranteed handover date.
After completion, the item is collected from the same studio within one month of notification or shipped to addresses only in Japan. If domestic delivery is requested at the start, the shipping fee is paid with the repair cost; if added later, the provider sends a payment link. Its repair page separately describes food use for its natural-urushi tableware repairs, but gives a separate warning for glass repairs: synthetic resins may be used and may contain ingredients not tested under food-safety law. Confirm the material and intended use for your own item. Do not transfer the general tableware statement to glass repairs, another workshop or another finish.
“Take home today” doesn’t mean “ready to use today”
05 · Before packing your pottery
Bringing a cherished item changes the decision. A provider may limit its size, number of broken parts, missing pieces or handles. The item may also need to stay untouched while it dries.

If the listing does not state the material and care instructions, ask before booking. Do not fill the gap with a general claim about all kintsugi.

Can I complete traditional kintsugi in one day?
No, not from a fresh break. Natural urushi has to cure between stages, so a full repair takes weeks to months; TSUGU TSUGU quotes a minimum of three months for its professional service. A one-day class either uses modern materials or a vessel prepared in advance, on which you do one stage and the gold finish.
Can I take my piece home the same day?
Usually yes. Modern and epoxy classes finish the piece in the session. TSUGU TSUGU's 90-minute urushi workshop sends it home in a drying box that you keep closed at 20–30°C for at least a day. Tomi Studio's two-hour modern class also finishes in the session.
Can I bring my own broken bowl?
Only on courses that say so. Tomi Studio and Viator 13441P60 don't allow it; one Nihonbashi listing (GYG 649544) does, within size and damage limits. To repair your own piece with urushi, you need a multi-session course: about 10 classes at TSUGU TSUGU, or Urujyu's 2-hour basic course for small chips.
Can I safely eat from the repaired piece?
Only if the studio says so for that exact product. TSUGU TSUGU says its natural-urushi repairs are food-safe, but not its glass repairs (synthetic resin may be used) or the brass finish. The Minami-Aoyama Viator class is decorative only, and TSUGU TSUGU's epoxy class isn't for tableware.
Is a modern class fake kintsugi?
No, if it says what it is. Tomi Studio calls its class Modern Kintsugi and says it uses modern materials instead of natural lacquer. The problem is a listing that doesn't name its materials.
Can natural urushi cause a skin reaction?
Yes. Kintsugi Kurashi and Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi caution that natural urushi can trigger contact dermatitis or skin irritation before it fully cures. If you have sensitive skin, choose a class without urushi; TSUGU TSUGU recommends its epoxy class for that reason. Wear clothes you don't mind staining.
Are kintsugi workshops suitable for children?
It depends on the class: TSUGU TSUGU lists ages 13 and up for its urushi workshop and 6 and up for its epoxy class. Viator 13441P60 has a minimum age of 6; both Nihonbashi GetYourGuide products exclude under-13s. These published conditions were rechecked on 11 October 2026.
Can I pay with an overseas card?
The payment step for your selected product decides this; a workshop description does not guarantee your overseas card. TSUGU TSUGU’s shop footer lists Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express among its payment options, but does not establish acceptance for every workshop checkout. Tomi Studio’s class page does not list card networks (checked 11 October 2026).
