Japan-checked workshop guide
Kintsugi workshops in Tokyo and Kyoto
Choose the method before you book: modern, staged traditional or a full repair that follows natural urushi curing time.
All 11 cited page bodies were checked on 30 August 2026. Availability is Unknown for every route because no exact date or package inventory was selected or observed. Re-open the exact product before paying.

Japan-side verdict
The 15-second answer
Choose the method before the city or price. A souvenir-style session, one stage of traditional work and a full natural-urushi repair are different products.
Conditions that change the answer
- Best for
- Travellers who can match the method, finished use and drying time to their trip.
- Skip if
- The provider cannot explain the materials, food-use advice, curing time or whether you may bring your own item.
Choose by traveller type
- How your trip works
- Tokyo and Kyoto studios are usually reached by rail. The booking decision is the method and timing, not the transport mode.
- Conditions to check
- A high workshop rating does not prove which lacquer, powder, drying process or finished-use rule the session includes.
Short answer
Do not choose from the words traditional, lacquer or gold alone. Decide whether you want a finished-looking souvenir, a class that teaches one real stage of traditional kintsugi, or a full repair of your own vessel with natural urushi.
A full traditional repair is not a one-hour job. A short workshop may be modern, or it may use a piece prepared before you arrive. Both can be worthwhile when the method is clear.60-second workshop chooser
Which kind of kintsugi session fits your trip?
Your answers stay in this browser tab. The result identifies a format, not a “best” provider.
Choose one answer in each row
This tool narrows the workshop format. It does not verify a provider's materials, safety claims or current availability.
01 · Start with the process
The three workshop types are not interchangeable
More process ownership usually means more curing time, more hand-offs and less certainty that the object leaves with you that day.
Modern or simplified
Designed for a short visit and a finished-looking souvenir. It may use resin, adhesive or another easy-to-handle material system rather than every natural-lacquer stage.
Best question: What materials will I use?Staged traditional introduction
The provider prepares earlier stages, explains the full process and lets you perform a selected part on a prepared piece.
Best question: Which stage will I do myself?Full traditional repair
A repair of your own vessel with natural urushi, including the wait between stages. It can require repeat visits or a long studio-managed schedule.
Best question: How will every stage and hand-off work?Transparent modern wording can be more useful than vague heritage language. Tomi Studio, for example, explicitly calls its class Modern Kintsugi and says it uses modern materials instead of natural lacquer. TSUGU TSUGU describes a 90-minute tourist product that uses a prepared piece, but the exact 90-minute tourist product does not establish English support. Regular-class language support is conditional, and its regular traditional repair takes roughly two to three months.

Compare what the booking page commits to
This is not a universal “best workshop” ranking. The table records material decision points, not volatile prices or review scores.
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Listing | Session | Bring your own? | Finished-use wording | What remains unclear |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nihonbashi · GYG 649544 | 90 min; English; max 10 | Yes, within stated size and damage limits | Decoration only; dry about one week | Exact adhesive or lacquer system |
| Nihonbashi · GYG 780970 | 90 min; English; max 5 | Yes; handles excluded; completion not guaranteed | Dry food possible; mainly decorative | Why it differs from the other venue listing |
| Minami-Aoyama · Viator | About 1 hr; supplied plate | No | Decorative; not for food | Natural urushi and finishing material not established |
| Kyoto Gion · Klook | Headline 1 hr; English/Japanese | Supplied plate; larger options may cost extra | Take-home stated | Material system, cure time and intended use |
| Roppongi · Klook | 2 hr; English/Japanese | Bring your own item or use a prepared piece | Not listed | Availability Unknown — no exact date/package inventory was observed |

03 · Direct benchmarks
Keep non-commission options in the comparison
Urujyu in Miyama
Another Kyoto's official tourism listing—not Urujyu's provider page—owns the ki-urushi wording, English support, maximum of four people, session of at least 2.5 hours and rural Miyama access. Those published details make it a useful traditional benchmark, but they do not establish inventory.
Urujyu's own page separately establishes lacquer repair, gold and silver finishing, and four short-course types. It does not establish the tourism listing's duration, English support or rural-access details.
TSUGU TSUGU in Tokyo
Its exact 90-minute tourist product demonstrates an intermediate stage and lets visitors apply gold powder to a prepared piece, but that exact product does not establish English support. Regular-class language support is conditional. Its regular full repair takes roughly two to three months, which helps show what one session can honestly contain without transferring a language promise between products.

Why we recommend this: decision evidence
Decision evidence ledger
What the evidence proves — and what it does not
This guide separates a listing's exact commitment from assumptions about a venue, method name or review score.
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Decision | Verified finding | Source basis | What it changes for the traveller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is the session modern or traditional? | The words kintsugi, lacquer and gold are not enough. The provider must identify the material or the stages actually taught. | English first-party provider pages | Choose by process and material, not by the heritage language in a marketplace headline. |
| Can the finished piece hold food? | Two products at the same Nihonbashi address publish different finished-use wording: decoration only versus dry-food wording. | English marketplace product pages | Match care advice to the exact product ID and keep any provider clarification in writing. |
| Can you bring your own item? | Eligibility depends on the product's size, damage, handle and completion limits; a venue-level assumption is unsafe. | English product-specific listings | Check the exact object against the booked product instead of packing a valuable piece based on a general workshop description. |
| What can one short class honestly include? | A short workshop may use a supplied or prepared piece while a full traditional repair takes multiple stages and much longer curing. | English first-party and tourism pages | Decide whether the goal is a souvenir, one authentic stage or a complete repair before comparing prices. |
| Can this page prove a date is bookable? | No. All 11 cited page bodies were retrieved, but no exact date/package inventory was selected or observed. Availability therefore remains Unknown for every route. | Direct page-body readback without inventory selection | Re-open the exact route for the intended date and package; page access alone is not proof that a session can be booked. |
| Is English promised for this exact session? | Only when the exact product says so. TSUGU TSUGU's exact 90-minute tourist product does not establish English, and its regular-class language support is conditional. | Exact product and first-party provider wording | Confirm instructor, interpreter or written-material support for the exact session instead of transferring a venue-level language claim. |
This ledger records source-backed decisions, not personal experience. Field tests are labelled separately.
04 · Before you pack a bowl
“Take it home today” does not mean “use it today”
Bringing a cherished item changes the decision. A provider may limit its size, number of broken parts, missing pieces or handles. The item may also need to stay untouched while it dries.
- What diameter, height and number of breaks are accepted?
- Are chips, cracks, missing pieces and handles accepted?
- Can my item actually be finished during this session?
- How should I pack it while it dries or cures?
- When may I touch, wash or use it?
- Is it decorative only, suitable for dry food, or approved for another explicitly stated use?
- Are hand washing, microwaves or dishwashers restricted?
If the listing does not state the material and care instructions, ask before booking. Do not fill the gap with a general claim about all kintsugi.

Eleven questions worth getting in writing
- Is the method modern, staged traditional or full traditional?
- What adhesive, lacquer and finishing powder will be used?
- What protective equipment or clothing is required, and can the material stain clothes?
- Which stages will I perform myself?
- Can I bring my item, and what damage is excluded?
- How long must the piece dry or cure?
- What exact use is allowed after curing?
- Is English support an instructor, interpreter or written material?
- What age and accessibility restrictions apply?
- What is the cancellation deadline and time zone?
- Is my date available, and can the provider confirm any important answer in writing?

Which answer would change your workshop booking?
Use the exact product, not just the studio name. The existing Viator product 13441P60 specifies a supplied piece and decorative use; a different product at the same venue may have different conditions.
If columns are cut off, scroll sideways. Keyboard: focus the table, then use Left/Right Arrow keys.
| Your situation | Check next | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| You want to repair your own item | Find a product that expressly accepts that item and its damage. | Do not take a supplied-piece workshop as permission to bring your own. |
| You need a food-use result or complete traditional process | Confirm the exact materials, work stages, curing and written care conditions. | A one-session souvenir is not proof of a complete traditional repair or food suitability. |
| Language, access or age matters | Ask for the actual arrangements before making a non-refundable commitment. | A generic participation or accessibility label does not answer every requirement. |
| The required answers already fit | Review the existing booking list and the selected date’s final total and terms. | There is no requirement to complete another enquiry form before using those links. |
Existing product order and the single disclosed affiliate link remain unchanged. This source check did not select a date, confirm seats or quote a current price.

Compare the complete cost of two workshop quotes
Bring two quotes, not two headline prices
Enter the total for the same people, dates and intended service. Start with the whole booking or whole-trip amount from each quote, not a per-day or per-person headline. No prices are prefilled and no exchange rate is guessed.
If required extras or a deposit are unknown, leave that field empty and ask the provider. Enter 0 only when you have checked that it does not apply. Do not enter booking or card details.
Numbers stay in this tab. Nothing is saved to an account, sent to a provider or added to your trip. A changed field clears the old comparison.

Kintsugi workshop FAQs
Can I complete traditional kintsugi in one day?
You can complete a one-day workshop, but not every stage of a full natural-urushi repair starting from a newly broken vessel. A short class may use modern materials or prepare earlier stages in advance. Ask which applies.
Can I bring my own broken bowl?
Some products allow it and others do not. Size, number of breaks, missing pieces and handles can be restricted. A listing may also warn that your item cannot be completed within the booked session.
Can I eat from the finished piece?
Do not assume so. The products checked range from decorative only to one listing that permits dry food. Follow the current written instruction for the exact product and material system you book.
Is a modern class fake kintsugi?
Not if it is described honestly. A modern class can be a useful, enjoyable introduction. The problem is unclear marketing that prevents a visitor from understanding the method before paying.
Can natural urushi cause a skin reaction?
Yes. Workshop pages from Kintsugi Kurashi and Tsutsumi Asakichi Urushi warn that natural urushi can cause contact dermatitis or other skin reactions before it is fully cured. Ask the exact workshop whether you need protective equipment or clothing and whether the material can stain clothes.
Are kintsugi workshops suitable for children?
The age rule varies by product. Two Nihonbashi listings exclude under-thirteens, while the Minami-Aoyama listing excludes children under six. Check the exact booking page.
Can I pay with an overseas card?
Card acceptance can vary by marketplace, card issuer and checkout. Treat the booking as incomplete until checkout succeeds, and read the cancellation terms before trying another route.
