Visiting Fushimi Inari: which station, how long the mountain walk takes and the shrine's rules
Checked against 4 official sources. 3 minute read.
What to know first
Fushimi Inari Taisha is right beside JR Inari Station, about five minutes from Kyoto Station by JR. Keihan's Fushimi-inari Station is a different station, about five minutes' walk west of the shrine. The shrine has no closing gate and you can visit day or night, though staffed services keep shorter hours. We have not verified lighting or path conditions on the mountain after dark, so this guide does not cover walking the mountain at night. The full circuit of the mountain is about four kilometres and takes about two hours, there and back. Drones, smoking and feeding wildlife are all prohibited.

|---|---|---|
| Inari | JR, about five minutes from Kyoto | Beside the shrine |

The two stations have similar names but are on different railways. The shrine recommends coming by public transport; its car park is for people visiting the shrine only.

Opening hours
The city lists the shrine as open for worship day and night, with no closing gate. Staffed services keep shorter hours. We have not verified lighting or conditions on the mountain paths after dark, so this guide does not describe a night walk.

The mountain walk
- Length: the full mountain circuit is about four kilometres and about two hours, including the way back down.
- The summit: Ichinomine, at 233 metres.
- Shrine circuit or Kyoto trail: the shrine's mountain circuit is not the same as the Kyoto trail that continues on from it; know which one you are on.

The rules on the mountain
- No drones, no smoking or fires, no entering restricted areas, and no damaging the torii gates or other shrine property.
- Do not approach or feed wild animals.
- Do not block the narrow paths to take photographs.
- Commercial photography, and photography in prohibited areas, is restricted.

Worked example: a morning visit from Kyoto Station
- JR to Inari: about five minutes.
- The full mountain circuit: about two hours for about four kilometres.
- So allow around two and a half hours from Kyoto Station and back for the shrine plus the circuit, before any stops (our judgement).
