Japan eSIM not working? Find the step that actually failed
“Not working” can mean five different things. Locate the stopped step before changing settings that belong to another one.

Treat the setup as five states: purchase, delivery of the activation details, profile installation, plan activation and first connection to a Japanese network. Identify the stopped state before you toggle, delete or buy anything else.
Conditions that change the answer

- Travellers whose Japan data eSIM has not come to life, whether they are still at home or already through immigration.
- Skip if
- The phone has not passed the hardware, carrier-lock and sale-region checks. A compatibility failure cannot be repaired from the activation screen.
Choose by traveller type
- The five states
- Use the diagnostic table first. A missing QR code, an uninstalled profile and an installed line with no carrier require different handoffs.
- What toggle lists miss
- Generic toggle lists usually start after the profile is already installed. They cannot repair an order email that never arrived or a profile that never downloaded.
Where did it fail?
Start from what is visible on the phone or in the order account. Do not start from a favourite fix. The table is a routing tool, not a claim about which problem is most frequent.

Installation puts a profile on the device. Activation starts the plan under the seller's terms. First connection registers the line on a network in Japan. Do not assume those moments are the same: check what your provider says starts the validity period before installing early.
Before departure: break the internet loop safely
Apple states that an iPhone normally needs WiFi or a hotspot while an eSIM is being set up, with a limited exception for some eSIM-only models and regions. That creates a practical loop: the traveller wants mobile data because there is no connection, but the profile first has to be downloaded over a connection.
The right preparation depends on the product. If the provider separates installation from activation, its instructions may let you install before flying and start the plan after landing. If installation starts the countdown, doing it too early can waste paid days. Read that one condition before acting; this site does not generalise it across providers.
- Confirm what event starts the plan and its validity period.
- Save the order reference and activation details somewhere available without mobile data.
- Complete the three compatibility checks before treating the problem as activation.
- Keep the provider's official support route available.
Already at a Japanese airport
Narita, Haneda, Kansai and Naha each publish a free WiFi service. That means arrival-day installation can be attempted when the traveller still has the provider's usable activation details. Coverage and cautions differ, so use the airport's own network name rather than an SSID suggested by a stranger.

Free does not mean private. Kansai states that data is not encrypted between the device and the wireless access point and that access logs are stored. Narita recommends a VPN for users seeking a secure connection.
Keep the conclusion proportionate: airport WiFi is a useful recovery route, not proof that a provider's app or website is compromised. Use a VPN if you already have one, avoid unnecessary payment or account changes, and do not paste activation details into an unofficial chat.
The profile is installed, but there is no connection
Once the line is visible in settings, the problem has moved past delivery and installation. Now device-specific steps make sense.
On iPhone
Apple's published sequence is short: turn Airplane Mode on and off; open Settings, then Cellular, confirm that the line is listed and switch it off and on; restart the phone; and check for a carrier-settings update under Settings, General, About. On iOS 18 or later, Apple's Support app can run further diagnostics.
These are Apple menu paths. They are not universal Android instructions.
On Android
Android menus vary by manufacturer, model, carrier and software version. Use the handset maker's support page for the exact model and the eSIM provider's Android instructions. Google also directs Pixel users to their carrier because eSIM and dual-SIM support can depend on that carrier.
If a carrier name appears but data does not move, check which line is selected for mobile data and apply only the roaming or APN setting that the provider explicitly documents. Do not copy a random APN from a forum into a different product.
Two lines can still produce one unwanted bill
Adding a travel eSIM does not automatically disable the home line. Apple states that the travel eSIM can carry data while the home eSIM remains active and can still incur roaming fees.
Keeping the home number reachable can be useful for calls or verification messages, but it is a deliberate cost decision. Check the home carrier's roaming terms, decide which line carries data, and verify the active-line state on arrival and again after returning home.
What not to use as a first fix
- Do not delete the eSIM before asking the provider. Apple's published sequence moves from toggles and restart to provider support; it does not require deletion as the normal first path.
- Do not factory-reset the phone as routine troubleshooting. It is outside the manufacturer sequence established for this guide and adds a much wider recovery problem.
- Do not publish the QR code, EID or IMEI. Keep device identifiers and activation material inside the provider's official support channel.
- Do not assume public WiFi is private. Follow the security caution published by the airport whose network you selected.
- Do not buy a second eSIM to remove a carrier lock. Return to the compatibility checks.
Hand the provider one useful support message
Apple recommends preparing the exact error message, phone number, account password or PIN, and the IMEI or EID before contacting the carrier. Google likewise notes that a Pixel carrier may ask for IMEI 1, IMEI 2 or the EID.
- State which of the five setup states failed.
- Attach the exact error wording or a private screenshot.
- Include the order reference and purchase email.
- Give IMEI or EID only through the official support route.
- Say whether a carrier name appears and which line carries data.
- List the troubleshooting steps already completed once.
If the device is the problem, change the product
A locked, older or non-eSIM phone can still join an ordinary WiFi network. A rented router therefore bypasses the eSIM-compatibility problem, although it introduces battery, collection, return and group-separation trade-offs.
Use Pocket WiFi or eSIM for Japan to decide from how the group moves, not from an unsupported claim that one product is best for everyone.
