Japan eSIM with a phone number: what you actually need

Worked example

A couple planning a two-week trip to Japan need three things: (a) a restaurant booking form that sends an SMS code to the number on file, their UK mobile (+44); (b) a concert ticket sale three weeks before departure that requires a Japanese 070/080/090 number for SMS; and (c) maps and messaging for both during the trip.

Result: They need two data eSIMs and the UK line left on for SMS. A Japanese number would not receive the restaurant code sent to +44. Japan pickup cannot meet the pre-departure sale deadline. For postal delivery abroad, check that the checkout date is before the sale and that Mobal's Voice & SMS roaming add-on is enabled for receiving SMS outside Japan (JPY 5,995 each time it is enabled).

The iPhone setting that makes (a) and (c) work together: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → select the Japan eSIM. Keep the UK line on for calls and messages, and leave "Allow Cellular Data Switching" off unless you want the UK line to carry data during calls (it can't switch while the data line is roaming).

Data-only fits when everything on your list runs over the internet: navigation, timetables, translation, lookups and calls or messages inside apps where the other person uses the same app.

This says nothing about a separate home line that remains active on the handset. That second line has its own roaming, call and message terms.

A code addressed to the home number still needs that number to be reachable. Where travel data comes from is a separate decision.

Ask your carrier these questions against the actual plan before departure:

1. Does this plan work in Japan, and does it need roaming or a travel add-on enabled first?
2. Can it receive SMS in Japan, and what is the charge?
3. Can it receive calls in Japan, and what is the charge?
4. What happens if you miss a call, and are you charged for it?
5. How do I keep calls and texts available while preventing the home line from carrying mobile data?

If the intended setup is home-line messages plus travel-eSIM data, confirm that the handset can keep both lines active and can assign data to the correct one.

A named domestic SMS requirement is the clearest case. Start with the exact ticket page, app or booking route rather than assuming that every Japanese service behaves the same way. Our ticket booking guide shows why the number format, SMS and receiving device must be checked together.

A callback can also be operationally useful: a host confirming arrival, a restaurant calling about a change or a counter trying to reach you. That is a convenience decision, not a claim that Japanese businesses refuse international numbers. A reachable home line may already solve it.

Mobal now lists Voice-only and Voice+Data alongside data-only products. The voice plans include a Japanese 070, 080 or 090 number and SMS; a data-only plan does not replace that number.

Format doesn't guarantee instant setup

An eSIM is a delivery method, not a promise about how fast the account behind it opens.

Mobal's voice eSIM help calls the physically delivered pre-activation item an eSIM Access Code, while its terms call the same fulfilment-stage credential a verification code. Treat those as the code-delivery step, separate from the later eSIM installation QR or activation information. For delivery in Japan, the required ID must match the name and delivery address; a passport is not accepted for that postal route.

For overseas delivery, availability, required ID and the estimated delivery time depend on the destination and are shown at checkout. Rely on delivery before arrival only if that date fits. Buy by specific plan and setup method, not broad category names. The product page and applicable terms both have to describe the exact product and fulfilment route you selected.

If a Japanese number sits on a critical booking path, settle two things before travel: whether the service genuinely requires the domestic number, and how the voice-and-SMS product is fulfilled.

Running the home number beside a Japanese data line is specific to the handset and carriers. Apple documents that supported Dual SIM setups can use two numbers for calls and messages while one cellular-data network is active at a time. Two different carriers require an unlocked iPhone unless both plans come from the same carrier.

On iPhone, select your mobile data line separately

Keeping the home number in a supported Dual SIM setup does not choose the mobile-data line or guarantee that a particular OTP will arrive. In Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Cellular Data, choose the line that is intended to carry mobile data. The iPhone still uses one cellular-data network at a time.

Treat this as a data-routing check, not an OTP switch. Whether a home-number OTP arrives, what the home carrier or plan charges, and the individual call, voicemail, roaming and switching result remain Unknown until the sender, carrier, plan and handset setup are confirmed. This is Apple-specific guidance; do not copy the menu or behavior to Pixel or another Android phone.

Google documents that supported Pixel and operator combinations can choose the SIM for data, calls and texts. Those instructions are Pixel-specific; they are not a universal Android menu.

• Can this handset keep two lines active at the same time?
• Can it use one line for data and the other for calls and messages?
• Is it unlocked from the carrier that sold it?
• Is there an available eSIM or physical-SIM position for the Japan profile?

1. Which Plan Type is displayed? Data Only, or Data, Voice & Text.
2. Does it come with a phone number—and if so, what type? For a Japanese mobile line, look for a stated 070, 080 or 090 number.
3. Which voice and SMS features are explicitly supported? Check receiving and sending separately.
4. How is it delivered and activated? Digital delivery, ID review, post or in-person collection.
5. Which document is required, and at what stage?
6. How long does the number remain active?
7. Can the profile be reinstalled?
8. What changes on the home line? Reconcile that with the accounts that still send messages there.
9. Is tethering permitted? Check before planning to share it with a companion or tablet.

Mobal currently lists Voice-only at JPY 4,950 for the eSIM, then JPY 1,430 per month, and Voice+Data at JPY 4,950, then from JPY 1,650 per month (tax included). Voice-only has a prorated first calendar month, then billing on the first of each month; incoming calls and SMS are free; domestic calls cost JPY 44 per minute and domestic texts JPY 33 each. These are current advertised plans, not a confirmed price change for an existing Voice Lite contract.

To end a voice plan, sign in to Mobal MyAccount, open Services, select More Information for the line, then Cancel Service. Choose the Cancellation Date, which is your last full day of service, and submit. The Wi-Fi rule about requests by the 20th is a separate product rule.

Full termination permanently disconnects the line and loses the number. Remove it from accounts that still use it for verification before canceling. Delayed outgoing-call or SMS charges can arrive for another 1–2 months. Voice Lite cannot be suspended or ported; the help page offers separate suspension and porting routes for eligible Voice+Data products.

The message is routed to the number already held by the account. A second number cannot intercept it.

1. List every service that will send you a code during the trip, and the number each one has on file.
2. If they're all your home number: ask your carrier "Can I receive SMS in Japan on my plan, and what does it cost?" You don't need a Japanese number.
3. If one service needs a 070/080/090 number: find the date you first need it, and buy a voice plan only if it can be active by then (check the provider's delivery or collection step).
4. On iPhone, set Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data to your travel line before you land.
