A Laojie stall-food diary: spicy skewers, a sweet drink and insect skewers
Haruru visited Laojie for the stall-food outing she had been looking forward to. A skewer seller’s performance caught her attention, a sweet drink offered a break, and she finally tried insect skewers after plenty of deliberation.
From haruru.1002’s past accounts.
Skewers first, then a sweet drink
She bought grilled octopus tentacles and pork skewers after being drawn to the seller’s performance. She enjoyed them, though the seasoning was spicy for her.
For a change of taste, she chose a sweet drink with mix-ins selected from options such as tapioca, almond jelly and fruit. Of the milk-tea and coconut-juice bases, she picked milk tea. The large serving tasted even better than she had expected.
Grasshopper and silkworm skewers, followed by oysters
At the insect stall, she considered centipedes, spiders and caterpillars before choosing grasshopper and silkworm skewers. She found them crisp, mild in flavour and enjoyable.
She then ate two oysters, which she described as grilled and topped with a sauce made with chopped garlic and chilli. Their flavour became another favourite of the outing.
There was more to look at along the way
There was also time to walk around and look at the stalls. Pictures of their displays remain alongside the account of the food she actually ate.
She noticed a place offering individual hotpots with ingredients on a conveyor. It looked interesting, but she was already too full to try it. She ended the account by saying that there was more of the day’s story to come.
