Meeting her daughter in Hong Kong, then arriving in Shenzhen for dumplings and shaved ice
After meeting her daughter in Hong Kong, Haruru travelled by bus to Shenzhen. Dumplings and fruit-filled shaved ice welcomed her there, followed by a delivered dinner when rain changed their evening plans.

From their reunion to a bus journey to Shenzhen
Haruru was relieved to meet her daughter safely. Neither was hungry enough for an immediate lunch, so they decided to head from Hong Kong to Shenzhen.
She was intrigued by the bus, including seats that faced one another. They changed buses once along the way. Even in a comfortable seat, she found herself worrying about missing their stop before arriving in Shenzhen under cloudy skies.
Soup dumplings and shaved ice with watermelon and mango
Still not particularly hungry on arrival, Haruru followed her daughter’s suggestion of soup dumplings and a delivery of shaved ice.
The shaved ice came with plenty of her favourite watermelon and mango. She enjoyed the sweet fruit and the generous serving, and was struck by how slowly it melted.
The soup dumplings bought at the mall had tasty wrappers and plenty of juices, just right for her smaller appetite. When she said she would like shaved ice again before leaving, her daughter mentioned another place to try. It gave her something else to look forward to.
A delivered dinner when it rained
They had considered walking to a restaurant that evening, but rain and an early start to the day led them to order delivery instead. Skewers, a garlic-rich oyster dish and vegetable dishes went well with rice, she recalled.
That brought the first day’s meals to a close. She fell sound asleep, woke early the next morning and wrote that she was looking forward to the breakfast buffet.
