Three memorable wrapped dishes at a year-end gathering, then karaoke

For a year-end gathering, Haruru visited an acquaintance’s yakitori restaurant for the first time and asked for recommendations. Three dishes stood out: a tomato roll, pīchī-yaki and a hanpen roll. At a second venue, she enjoyed singing in a snack bar with a Showa-era atmosphere.

A large tomato, pīchī-yaki and a hanpen roll

Haruru enjoyed the combination of a rich tomato cocktail and a tomato roll. The rolls she had eaten before used small tomatoes, but this one used a large tomato, which she found particularly juicy and delicious.

The pīchī-yaki was fresh green pepper generously filled with cheese and wrapped in thinly sliced meat. She ate it with Tabasco and enjoyed the pepper’s crisp texture. When she first read the menu, she had mistaken the name for something made with peach.

The generously sized hanpen roll combined hanpen with a shiso leaf and a wrapping of pork belly. As a hanpen fan, she was pleased by its size. It was her first time trying that combination, and she liked the fluffy texture.

They ate plenty of other dishes too, but these three were the ones she especially wanted to remember.

Drinks to remember, then singing at a second venue

Haruru also found the yogurt cocktail rich and delicious, enough to feel she might be tempted to drink too much.

For the second stop, they went to a snack bar full of Showa-era atmosphere. There was a stage, and she sang enthusiastically. With plenty still to do over the holidays, the happy evening left her feeling ready to make another effort.
