Hatsumode 2027: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka New Year visits

Checked against 19 official sources. 3 minute read.

What to know first

As of 30 October 2026, the seven temples and shrines below had not yet published their 2026–27 hatsumode hours and restrictions. Use the 2025–26 details only to compare options. JR East has announced extra trains on six metropolitan-area lines after the last trains on New Year’s Eve; this does not by itself show a route to any particular shrine.

For visitors choosing a New Year visit in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka or nearby areas.

Meiji Jingu, Tokyo

Last season, the gates stayed open across midnight. The shrine also listed three entrances: Harajuku, Yoyogi and Sangubashi. Vehicles could not enter the grounds on the first three days. Food stalls at Fureai Hiroba were announced from 12/31; this is not a 2027 stall announcement.

Senso-ji, Tokyo

The temple lists ordinary main-hall hours of 06:30–17:00 from October–March (months 10–3). Do not treat those hours as its New Year’s Eve programme. Senso-ji has no car park.

Naritasan Shinshoji, Chiba

For 2025–26, approach-road restrictions ran from 12/31 21:00 to 1/1 19:00, then 09:30–19:00 on 1/2–3. Coin-operated municipal car parks along the approach were unavailable during restrictions. These dates are last season’s reference only.

Kawasaki Daishi, Kanagawa

Last season’s road restrictions ran from 12/31 22:00 to 1/1 19:00, then 10:00–19:00 on 1/2–3. The temple’s ordinary hall-hours page applies from February to December and cannot by itself show New Year opening hours.

Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto

Last season, food stalls ran from 12/31 to 1/5. The shrine directs visitors to Kyoto Travel’s crowd forecasts and live cameras. Eat and drink only in the designated free rest areas; do not eat while walking or standing elsewhere in the grounds.

Commercial photography, photography in prohibited places and photographs that block narrow paths are prohibited. Keep the route clear when stopping for a picture.

Yasaka Jinja, Kyoto

Kyoto City Tourism Association lists the purification ceremony at 15:00 and Joya-sai at 19:00 on 31 December 2026. This is the tourism association’s current-season listing. The shrine’s standing guidance describes Okera-mairi from around 19:30 on 12/31 to around 05:00 on New Year’s Day.

Personal snapshots are allowed, but photography inside the main sanctuary and use of tripods, selfie sticks or drones are prohibited. There is no parking within the grounds.

Sumiyoshi Taisha, Osaka

Last season, no food stalls operated from 12/31 to 1/5. Godairiki stone collecting and fishing-fortune activities were closed from 12/31 to 1/4 to prevent crowd accidents. Do not assume either arrangement will repeat in 2027.

New Year’s Eve trains: confirmed and last-season information

JR East’s announcement of 22 October 2026 covers extra trains from 1 December 2026 to 28 February 2027 and confirms six metropolitan-area lines running after the last trains on New Year’s Eve into New Year’s Day. The line names are not established here: check the detailed timetable before planning a midnight visit.

For 2025–26 only: Kyoto’s tourism association listed Keihan overnight service from 12/31 18:00 to 1/1 07:00. Nankai and Keikyu did not run all night. These are last-season comparisons, not a promise of a 2027 return train.

A daytime visit: a planning example

Suppose you choose Meiji Jingu on 1/2 and aim to enter at 09:00. Last season it opened at 06:40 and closed at 18:00, so that plan fitted the published hours and was before the usually busy period after 10:00. Confirm the 2027 hours in December before relying on this example.

Questions before you go

Can I use these hours for January 2027? No. Historical hours are labelled 2025–26; ordinary hours and amulet-office hours are identified separately. Check the current-season announcement before choosing an arrival time.

Will a train take me back after midnight? Plan the return journey separately. JR East’s six-line announcement does not confirm which shrine you can reach; last season’s Keihan, Nankai and Keikyu information is not this season’s timetable.

Your next step

Choose one venue, keep a daytime alternative, and check its official New Year page and your outward and return trains in December. At Fushimi Inari, use the crowd forecasts and live cameras linked by the shrine before setting out.
